I have got mine today from a local retailer how always has stuff on sale a few days before the offical day!
Whilst all 3 films are supposed to have a DD EX soundtrack only Empire and Jedi appear to have the audio flags.
My Yamaha amp doesnt recognise Star Wars as EX,might just be my copy or might be a "fault" at large.
Just something to look out for when others get theirs.

There's no flagging on my New Hope as well.
Just watched the first two and the sound on Empire beats Hope hands down.

    Just Jedi to go.

Same here - no flag on New Hope. Also, Phantom Menace wasn't flagged either...

I've never had proper EX flagged or not on my amp until now on all 3 films. Thank you Mister Lucas!

Mine all have flags, but they are region 1. Not sure about region 2.

    Just finished watching all three.
Great stuff all round giving the films the justice they deserve.

They'll now go on the shelf with all the other DVDs I have.

And if I ever get the future urge to watch a Star Wars scene I'll reach out and play either the pod race in Ep.1 or the asteroid scene in Ep.2. :smashin:

I prefer the prequels and can't wait for Ep.3.

Seeing as the soundtrack is supposed to be DD EX the audio should contain "flags" in the bitstream that trigger an amp to switch to EX,otherwise it is a case of selecting EX manually.

The region 1 discs are the same  You have to manually select DD EX .

My ROTJ was flagged as well...though my amp did keep losing the flag on ESB for the first 10 minutes, it then settled down...

No problem with my discs they all show up as DDEX on my Sony 790. Maybe it has something to do with how you've connected the amp to the dvd player (Coax or Optical) and the sound output settings on the DVD player

That wouldn't be the case mate...the surround ex channel is matrixed into the surround left and right channels. If it's flagged it'll show up...if it's not, it won't. However, just because it's not flagged, dosen't mean it's not there.
I can see there being a mass recall of these discs. The flagging problem isn't the only problem with them it seems...

I have the region 2 vesion and dont know if anyone else has noticed, but in A New Hope, at times it sounds like it drops the treble and the actual "digital sound". My amp and DVD player say all are fine, but some of the battles have no direction and are muffled. Take a listen to the scene where Princess Leia is about to be shown the full power of the Death Star, or even the opening chase scene. Anyone else experience it?

I think that scene is specifically mentioned in the review here as having poor sound, they didn't make it sound that bad though. Just not as high quality as the rest of the film?

    Hopefully I'll see soon. :)

IMHO, I don't think that the films sound as good as the SE laserdiscs did... But for visuals and PQ, I don't think they can be faulted.

I have to agree on the sound front. The sound for ANH occasionanly feels like they forgot to enable a microphone or something although not on the soundtrack just on effects and some speech. ESB is alot better. Jedi is on for tonight :D The PQ is stunning and when you see Yoda in V and you think thats a puppet you have to hand it to Lucas for pulling this alltogether so well.

Just watched it tonight in EX.

thedigitalbits.com are suggesting the sound problems with ANH are bad enough for a re-pressing...

just tried snipetts of all 3 of my R2 copy on my 6.1 setup.

EPIV IS NOT flagged for DD-EX (even though the Language menu says it is   )
EPV & EPVI IS flagged for DD-EX.

A pattern is forming here methinks, dont think there anything wrong with anyone elses 6.1 setup either...

    I wish I'd bought R1 now :thumbsdow  :(

My opinion of this is as follows...Just becasue they are not flagged, dosen't mean they are not mixed in EX. There's plenty of films out there that aren't but are.
There was defo a lot of sound coming from the surround backs on my amp afetr I engaged EX manually...I know there would be anyway, but it sounded to me as though it was an EX mix...IYSWIM...

Well, Ep5 and six are "flagged". DDEX comes on fine and even the little speaker pic comes up on my Pioneer. Not with Ep4. Even when I switch to manual there is no pic of the rear surround speaker, though I do hear it, just. It is not my amp as Lord of the Rings works fine. A cock-up per chance?

Oh, and when I play Ep5 from the beginning the pic would'nt stay on widescreen (my tv is set for auto detect). On Ep4 it did it once. Have'nt tried with Ep6.

You can see the equipment I have. The DVD player is connected by a digital co-axial lead and I have no problems with other DDEX titles. As it is only happening on Ep4 I would presume it has something to do with the disc, not the equipment.
