So what do you think people will moan about first? The lack of DTS or 6.1?!

I'm looking forward to it as i have neither!

Those trailers, that music video, that Digital sound track, those effects, Jar-Jar, oh my! And commentary from the 'Big L'.

It's like...the holy grail (atleast until Indy 3 comes out!).

Good on yer George.(its about time)

Oh and if you could squeeze on a teaser for Ep 2 we'ed be grateful.

Let the George bashing begin! (go on you know you want to!)

Excuse my ignorance but isn't Dolby Digital 5.1 EX actually 6.1, being the new (at the time) sound format specifically created for TPM?(although it did appear on Fight Club as one of the first aswell).
In which case, no need to moan there.

Does he intend to unleash this ungodly disc on the world or is he just keeping it limited to R1 for now (not that it actually makes any difference)?

Nope, Dolby Digital 5.1 EX is just that: Dolby Digital 5.1 EX.

The use of the 6 in 6.1 should only be used to denote a 6th full range discrete channel, the only 6.1 sound format (so far) is DTS ES 6.1 Discrete.

Amplifiers however use the 6.1 to denote a sixth power or line output stage to allow for DD-EX/DTS-ES matrix.

Blimey I go out for a day and George Lucas decides to annonce the launch date and specs whilst im gone :( Every site I have visited now seems to be plugging this, except PLAT who currently have the same info as they have had for past 6 months

It does sound good and Im one of the lucky ones who can watch this followed by 4,5 and 6 in DD 5.1 cos I have the LDs :)

I agree that the number of surround formats on offer is exetensive to the point of some confusion.

Some of the confusion could be avoided if discs were labled 5.1 EX. Unfortunately I think the EX logo is copyrighted to THX, though I'm not sure even THX discs with EX mention it. I guess even this could lead to confusion amongst, for want of a better word, the uninformed; they may consider it to be a new format incompatible with standard DD systems.

BTW, I have the Die Hard trilogy on order from Play (£39.99 for the set), are you still interestd in 'Die Harder'? If so I'll contact you when it plops on to my door mat!

    Hi,

All I can say to Monsieur Lucas, is "Boooo"!! Release the original Trilogy first, then release "The Pantieless Menace"!

Until then, any Star Wars info is of no interest to me!

Can't stand it. I guess it's the same for a lot of people who see their 'trade' depicted on celluloid, but just about everything aviation related was plain wrong. I know in a great many actioneers that some (if not most) depicted events, whether humanly or technologically initiated, are at times beyond what is 'reasonable'; I just cannot suspend my belief during DH2.

That and the fake snow conspire to make no room for it on my DVD shelves.

    Confucius.
In complete agreement, i, am an electronics based technician (started as an electical engineer) and often see "our hero" pop open a small wall mounted panel, short out two (any) cables and voila instant access to a high security building/computer files etc etc!
Good job that door is 16 feet of solid, nuclear bomb proof steel.
Of course, it really is that simple you know! LIKE fudge!!
But then again he might of simply been connecting up a phone line or something.
    Re T2
I would strongly advise against anyone sticking a library card connected to a calculator into a cash dispensing machine in an attempt to fraudulantly obtain cash, it's not particually clever, it won't work and you will most likely recieve a criminal record and the derision of the local rag circulation,
    A word to the wise!

As I have posted elsewhere I think George lucas could be the basis for the next Bond villain!
    Think about it,
1, Evil lair = Skywalker Ranch
2, Evil plan = Extortionate pricing of THX branded goods
3, Evil method of brainwashing = Phantom Menace (you're gonna buy it arent you?)
4, Evil plans for world domination = You get the idea!

If this turns out to be in the next Bond film I will be waiting for my cheque! :p

Confirmed RRP of episode 1 is $29.95, not bad value (assuming like me you intend to buy).

Here's DVD File's chat with Lucasfilm's Jim Ward.

I expect we'll see a price war between the stateside retailers for TPM, starting quite soon no doubt.

Confucius: being the heathen that I am, yep, drop me a line when you get the DH set and I'll get my chequebook out. Thanks again :D

With the launch of What Video & TV Online in less than a couple of weeks, there is at least one very useful article explaining the new formats. This will be referenced by the FAQ here.
