I've just bought this set from Tesco-£54.97-I couldn't be bothered to order it online for a couple of quid difference.
    I'm glad I bought it,but:
I hate the packaging-it's fine for a Star Trek nut,but as someone who loved the show and also has a life,I'd rather have it in Amarays.Proper boxes look better on the shelf, and as the discs will last longer than me,I believe the packaging should too. This packaging is a disaster waiting to happen.
There's a lot of speckles on some episodes-maybe to be expected, but the sound is superb, the picture just lags behind a bit.
The insert is useless-a tiny thing to fit the packaging, but no notes of any use.It doesn't even tell you if the episodes are in their original order of transmission.
Despite all this,it's one of my better purchases. The show is still ahead of its time.Maybe the later Star Treks had bigger budgets, better sets etc,but they'll never have the charm of the originals.

I agree  The packaging is absolutely dreadful. It's almost impossible to get at the discs. You have to carefully open up the plastic 'clamshell' outer case, slide what appear to be disc trays from digipacks stuck togther with sellotape, out of a very flimsy outer card sleeve, which scuffs on the hard plastic outer case. Awful :thumbsdow

Great DVD's, though. Just wish more thought had been given to the box. :lease:

There was a thread at thedvdforums.com about the differences between R1 and R2 and it looks as though the R2 may be from a different print as someone did a comparison of the opening of the first episode and the R1 had less print damage.

Also the text commentary on the R1 is done pop up video style. as apposed to paler generated subs on the R2. And I am going to vote for the packaging, it may be a bit odd but Star Trek fans will look at it and just now that is how it should be.

I also hate the packaging for the Trek series. I ended up making my own covers by adapting a already done six disc cover for 2 disc cases.

So far I have only done TNG and DS9.

If the original R1 release of TOS wasn't so expensive, I would get them.

A friend has the R1 and I have the R2. After the above comment about them coming from a different print (highly unlikely if you really think about it) we did a few A/Bs and found no difference whatsoever.

These DVDs R1 or R2 look incredibly good, especially considering they are getting on for 40 years old.

There is however a difference between the R1 and R2 sets in terms of extras.

In the USA certain retail chains (Sam Goody's, Best Buy, Musicland, Suncoast and Media Play) have an in store offer, exclusive to them, of a bonus giveaway disc with two features. One is called romance in the 23rd Century and is a look at the tonsil tennis engaed in by Kirk and Co. The other is a Trek Connections feature.

These two features however are included as standard on the R2 version.

The episodes are (rather annoyingly) in order of transmission rather than in production order. If you look on the menus you'll see the production number in brackets alongside each episode title.
