Has anyone else noticed, no matter where you buy this from (USA or UK) the best price is about £50 region 1 and 2.

Is this a new pricing policy to try and thwart importation of R1 dvds?

If anyone finds this cheaper, or has noticed similar pricng on other dvd releases please post it below.

yes, thats an odd one. I have checked loads of the usual sites like DVD soon etc and all the same price. The release date isn't too far off either.

I'm really suspicious, this could be a sign of things to come.

yes it is, but you'd have to prove it. Who do we ask about something like this?

More importantly, would they do anything about it?

Maybe the cost price is high and everyone is trying to sell it as cheap as possible.

I think it has more to do with ST sets just being expensive, not something that we will see across the board. Compare all other boxsets and ST always costs more, still won’t stop me from buy these.

List price R2 is about £70 I think, and the best average price is £52 List price R1 is about $150 and best average price is $99 roughly £53. R1 canadian is CA125 roughly £52.

    See a pattern forming...

I dont want to sound paranoid, but I've feared something like this would happen for a while now. but then again, maybe its just Star Trek. We are the biggest dvd market for Star Trek.

I'll keep digging round, hopefully I'll find it cheaper in more than one place and it will even out and not sound so much like a conspiracy.

People who look hard enough for conspiracies usually find them, whether or not they exist.

For gods sake I'm not looking for a conspiracy, Im' just making conversation in the vein hope that someone may know of a cheaper way to buy this box set. If I uncover a conspiracy while doing that, everyone concerned is better off for knowing what is going on. If someone finds it cheaper and shares that information here, everyone concerned is better off for knowing that too.

    It was just polite conversation...

I should have said "in my opinion" on that one.

I'm basing that on the number of re, re releases the next gen had on video, and every time it came out it sold.

I can back that up with fact, but i sees it wit' my own 2 eyes. :D

Personally I think £50 (see play.com) is a good price for this set - remember it's the CLASSIC Trek series and this first season is full of gems + all the extras that come with it (shame no spoken commentaries from cast or crew though).

Hope 30 August arrives at warp speed! :)

Its not the price that bothers me. its the apparent price fixing. When was the last time you saw a dvd box set the same price r1 and r2. Not even Star Wars is costing the same both sides of the pond.
It was just an observation that has provoked conversation.

Remember what you paid for the series on vhs?£50 for 29 episodes of this classic,in 5.1 with extras is a bargain.Lucky you weren't buying in the laserdisc market, then you would have really known what paying for quality is like.

Once again for those who haven't been listening.

ITS NOT ABOUT HOW MUCH IT COSTS ME! ITS ABOUT HOW MUCH IT COSTS ALL OF US NO MATTER WHERE WE BUY IT FROM!

If I wanted to get it cheap, I'd have started the thread in the bargains section, or looked at dvdpricecheck.com. I was just pointing out that it was odd that it costs the same wherever in the world you buy it from despite differing exchange rates.

Greg, back me up on this one please...

I will be buying it at £50, on R2 which is a first, because there is no benefit in buying it on R1 because it is identical (i presume) and costs the same.

Not really related to the price, but I owned a few of the R1 DVD's containing a couple of episodes a piece, and the picture quality was stunning - much better than the later series - probably because The Original Series was shot on film rather than video.

Yes - the quality of the prints are stunning on those original 2 episode per disc release. Very happy to see them transferred over to the new release.

Fact that it was filmed rather than made on video has definitely helped in that respect but then the original series is better (in my opinion) on all production values than the later Trek series. I know the effects are obviously better now than in the 1960s but the lighting, music and pacing of those original episodes - especially season 1 and 2 - are far superior.

Give me Kirk & Co. over any other Trek team any day...

Yes, its not about the price. I never bought any TOS videos, but considering I paid probably about £160 for one season of TNG/DS9/Voyager on crappy VHS, £50 for one season of TOS is not a bad price. The question Fordy asked is why it is the same price everywhere? Not that £50 is expensive. Anyone have any ideas as to why? Maybe some new worldwide price policy from paramount? who know?

    And enough with the ***

    Greg,

Thank you for your support and you'll notice I removed said *** yesterday when offence was taken.

I've had a look round and can't find any obviously similar examples of pricing like this, but I will keep looking, I hope its just Trek...

Actually, all Star Trek series were made on film. However, the Next Generation's arrival coincided with a move to editing on video which accounts for the change in picture.I thought the original R1 dvd's were a bit rough. Some were very grainy. However, looking at the 2 on the Voyager set 1 it looks as if the PAL set will be much improved.
