Hope theres some Star Trek fans here who can help.

Despite seeing, and enjoying, the ST movies (most especially First Contact) the only incarnation as a TV series I have ever watched is the original 60s series and want to give the others a try but really dont know where to start with the various series etc.

Anyone any recommendations for a newbie?

If you want to watch trek in order then give

TNG
DS9
Voyager

Then

Enterprise a go.

TNG and DS9 are set in the same time so should be watched togeather.

Most people will say DS9 is the best trek and Enterprise and Voyager the worst but I really like these.

Or you can just start watching Enterprise and Voyager as these are set in different times

Enterprise being the 22ed century and the others the 24th.

Voyager is set in the Delta quadrant far from home and they are trying to get back to earth.

For ease of getting into Trek, TNG is the best. A lot of the episodes are individual so they can be watched in any order.

DS9 has a really good continous storyline but needs to be watched especially in order from season 3 to the end.

TNG and DS9 are not quite the same time. The start of DS9 is during Season 6 of TNG.

Season 4 of DS9 takes place after Star Trek Generations film. Star Trek First Contact takes place during DS9 season 5/Voyager season 3.

If anyones interested, here is the full order to watch every Trek episode and film.

If you have Virgin 1, they are showing season 3 of TNG at 2pm each day. Perhaps you could record it and see if you like it. Season 1 of TNG can make people stop watching but it is worth going.

TNG will always be my favourite series and crew. I watched it when it was on TV for the first time in the late 1980's/early 1990's. I might have not got into TOS at the same time.

On the downside, it is addictive watching and made me get every Trek episode on VHS then DVD and now TOS on BD. I even have quadrupled dipped on the films. I got such a rush getting my monthly DS9 and Voyager tapes (at £13 each for just two episodes). The DVD's are down to £10 per series/26 episodes now !!

I think everybody's covered the essentials & I agree TNG first. All the shows are great really the crews different in each series but like all series they get stronger with each episode. Enjoy. Oh & the Borg make there first appearance in TNG ;)

Make it so

Nice link Mr nwgarratt thanks:smashin:

If your getting into Sci fi my I also suggest Farscape!

One of the best Sci fi shows ever made, its a shame it was poorly promoted in the US and UK so didnt get the viewers it deserved!

Looks more like a series of Movies than a TV show and cost about as much to make.

The Forge!

PS: Star Trek is often mentioned in Farscape!

Ditto;)

The first season has it's flaws and the revised pilot (released last year) is a better watch than the original but it's fun show and has good characters and is well produced. Always useful to watch the theatrical movie prior to the series as well as it does lay some of the groundwork.

Others may disagree but TNG really got into it's stride from Season 3 onwards. Season 1 and, to a lesser extent, Season 2 was quite weak - the same goes for DS9 and Voyager as well. Also the early two seasons of TNG have dated badly IMHO. All this said though, for the most part, the Star Trek series remain hugely enjoyably Sci-Fi.

How long would it take some to watch every episode (say one per day) of TNG, then DS9, then Voyager, then Enterprise.....

1 Year? Maybe 2? More?

I have done it a couple of times but not at one a day. Started with Enterprise and finished with Voyager. I can easily watch three or four episodes in one session. A season can take 7 to 10 days. It worked out at just over 9 months. That was 704 episodes and 28 seasons.

There are 726 episodes over 30 seasons (inc the animated series).

I can watch Trek so easily, I have even been watching part of TNG on TV each day as it is on during lunch.

Just get everything with the Borg in it, they gave new life to Star trek.

It is still worth watching season 3 which is on virgin one atm. Todays was one of my favourites called Yesterday's Enterprise. Season 3 also has one of best (at the time) season cliffhangers ever.
