Isn't anyone else frustrated that the studios are all cheapening out when mastering the movie at a 2k intermediate and then releasing 4K UHD blu-rays based on that source?

Yes HDR is nice, but a native 4K source would be better, not some upscaled jobby.

The film was finished at 2K for its theatrical release, there is no other source from which the studios can grade the Ultra HD Blu-ray release. To do a new 4K DI for the tiny UHD BD market would mean re-rendering all the effects at 4K, which is prohibitively expense. Besides the addition of HDR, WCG and 10-bit will have a greater impact than just increasing the resolution.

I get it, but it's not like the studios in 2016 didn't realise UHD blu-ray was a thing. Why didn't they just finish it at 4k for the theatrical release in the first place? Why are they carrying on with 2k theatrical releases?

Exactly, so they are happy to be cheapskates and then want early adopters like us to pay a premium price to buy their movies on UHD blu-ray.

      Complete double standards.

Mhmm. chill. studios are definitely starting to adapt now though. many big budget films released recently have been with a 4k di, and they are increasing going forward now too. i think its picked up quite quickly actually.

ok, i'm talking about the 2D and 3D non HDR version here but is this me or did the standard bluray feel slightly lighted, overexposed, even in 3D which tends to be a slightly darker master. Too much grey and washed out colours especially in space scenes that could have been jet black or just lacked contrast and impact.

if you compare this to the first two movies, its like they were mastered by completely different people / systems - perhaps they were I haven't checked, or maybe this was due to the HDR mastering process, if it was mastered in HDR and then a none HDR version branched off from that master, perhaps that overly fattens the impact of the image?

I prefer the 3D version over HDR / 4K, I cant afford both, if I didnt have an OLED i'd probably get the 4K HDR version but 3D is just too good on my OLED.

So doesn't look great on Oled ? I'd assume the UHD would look even more washed out because of the maxed oled/contrast settings.

I watched the UHD version on my E6. Was not all that impressed. The space scenes have elevated blacks which is quite obvious on my OLED. This movie is not close to reference quality for UHD. Not even close to the quality of X-Men Apocalypse.

Were constantly being told, 4K TV must have latest hardware, blah blah blah, and they.... Oh hold on wait a minute, we'll not provide native 4K disks.. Not that important.. I know there were a variety of reasons, but lets think about why 3D didn't make it, hmmmm short cuts for profit making resulting in poor quality 3D a factor? Here we go again..

I guess it doesn't take much to impress me as I thought the picture looked fantastic and I only have an SDR 4K TV.

Watched the standard Blu-Ray over the weekend on my B6 and was not impress at all. Colors were massively muted and the blacks of space looked grey and muddy. Some scenes have nice deep blacks, such as the space ship interiors and look OK. Others such as those in space look so washed out it's unbelievable. I tried changing the gamma to make the space scenes a bit more 'spacey' but then you end up with crushed interior shots. Not sure who graded this or if its a by product of the HDR process but they did a terrible job IMO.

PQ gets a 3/10 from me for the non-HDR Blu-Ray, one of the worst discs I've seen this year.
