is their any proof that switching a TV, DVD, etc on and off at the mains causes damage instead of leaving it in standby mode.

I have heard that their is a power surge when you turn on and off at the mains.

I have surge protected socket on all the AV devices.

any help would be appriciated.

The surge or otherwise depends on the design of the specific equipment; some devices have a controlled soft-start, others don't.
Also check how much power is consumed in standby as this also varies considerably between different equipments.
