I dont think its any nerdier then knowing the pros and cons of LCD v Plasma or the latest tech in terms of NAS and media streaming. :D

I used to do it as a kid, mainly first day covers, and was quite good fun trying to find new ones that I didn't have or maybe some of the slightly rarer ones. My uncle is a stamp dealer and travels the world exhibiting his wares, and am constantly amazed the money people will spend on a rare stamp. So if you get serious, be warned. :smashin:

It might be nerdy- it can definately be expensive. My Dad's stamp collection (German stamps from 1919-45) was assembled in the 70's, 80's and early 90's and cost a few thousand pounds, not including an amazing donation from a guy who came from a family of postmasters in Munster. Recently, another [-]nutter[/-] collector offered £40,000 for it. He's had to put it into vault storage.

I don't think it's any worse than say owning two versions of the same film

    Individual stamps are rarely expensive. As you say, choosing an international theme can reduce costs. The moment that you want;

    -Old unused stamps
    -sets
-something than another collector also wants

    Watch the price go ballistic.

A complete set of stamps and marks issued for the Graf Zeppelin some of which illustrate that link went for well over a million quid nearly twenty years ago. It was the only complete set in existence but you get the idea.

I went through a phase of wanting to collect stuff (rugby league sown-on badges, horror film memorabilia & figurines), it didn't last long as it just felt a waste of money at the time :D

Don't worry about feeling nerdy. Not long ago I got really into building plastic scale models of military vehicles and building my own diorama which I guess it quite nerdy.

B - go for it if it makes you happy I reckon ? :smashin:

I don't see what's nerdy about it ? I'd look at it as an investment maybe.

I admire people with a passion for collecting, and some subjects are fascinating to look at. Erm while you're at it though, can I have half a dozen 1st class please ? :D

Yeah it's nerdy, but so what.

Enjoyed it as a kid, collecting setS, keeping it all organised.

Do what ya fancy, nerdy or otherwise.

I think it's only considered nerdy because of the stigma it has attached to it. In reality it's no more nerdy than collecting CD's, special edition dvd's or av equipment.

My wife's dad collects postcards which I guess is similar. Not my thing for sure (and he is a bit of an old school nerd) but sometimes it can be quite interesting. It's not the actual postcard collecting that I find dull but the subjects he chooses to base the collection on.

My dad collects stamps (Falklands and South Georgia mainly) and he in no way even remotely resembles a nerd :) I never saw the attraction but he likes the quiet time he gets whilst doing whatever it is a philatelist does.

Has he got any cheap, but rare, stamps he's trying to get rid of? ;-)

As nerdy as collecting Bluray slip covers?

Coins, bottles, autographs, belly button fluff.

Someone will collect it, no matter how odd it appears.

If you enjoy it, do it. Don't give a second thought to what other peolpe think.

I'm sure I read an article somewhere which discussed a connection between "collections" of that type and Aspbergers Syndrome.

You should see the collection of steam railway tckets at our house! No it's not nerdy...well, yes it is but who cares. It's not as bad as painting Games Workshop miniatures or collecting little statues of your favourite film characters/super heroes.

I don't see the appeal in it myself but if it takes your fancy then I see no reason not to have a go.

While some people with Aspergers collect things, there is no implicit reverse correlation ie if you collect things you shouldn't start worrying that you might have Aspergers.

Sure, go ahead, of course it's no more nerdy than anything else people on these forums are likely to do.

But don't expect huge returns. Remember:

    Philately will get you nowhere.
