I got Squirrels in the loft, any ideas on how to deal with this, no doubt pest control is the first option but all they will do is set traps right? Well I have set them just now (squirrel cages). The problem is they are most probably coming in from the vents in the gap of the joists but i suspect the loft needs these vent?

The b###### have started shredding my newly laid insulation.

They are a nuisance. You need to block gaps. If you are talking about the soffit or eaves then you need to use chicken wire. Usually the use a telephone wire to gain access, or maybe a power cable, they don't often scale walls.

If they are grey squirrels I think you have to kill them rather than let them go.

You can get done for releasing greys AFAIK.

I have put a trap there, they normally come home about now so I will see what I catch in the morning and then on the weekend put up the mesh on the ‘soffit' (thanks for the correct terminology) as karkus30 suggested.

If I trap 1, his mates don't stick around do there? I hate to go up there and have 50odd waiting for me...

    oh i plan too!!

Haha you will be lucky. We put traps down and they( or it ) didn't touch them. They just ripped up the insulation and crapped everywhere. One can sound like an army by the way.

I went up once and there were 30 of them waiting for me with baseball bats and broken bottles. The big one had a lurcher on a chain. :) 'wot you looking at no tail' it said menacingly.

A guy I worked with had them in the house he rented out to the DSS.

The tenant went into the loft with a can of hairspray and a lighter to get rid of them, he promptly set the roof on fire.

The owners landlord insurance then refused to pay out, as they said it was arson.

    Very expensive squirrels!

You could try smoke bombs and moth balls, but you'll need to get rid of them before they start breeding after to cold weather, although they may have already had their first litter of the year.

They will also try quite hard to get back in, so be very careful how you seal up the holes.

Gave them my mobile and they just left :)

We had a new roof fitted soon after ( bit extreme for getting rid of a Squirrel mind you ). We did put poison down but I don't think they touched it. Once the new roof was on and all the cracks filled along the gable end we didn't hear them again.

We had a issue with squirrels and in the end got some pest control guy round who put down some poison. He came round a few weeks later and got rid of the bodies..... problem sorted
