Now that you've managed to get me to buy The Rock Criterion [IMG] I was wondering if anyone knows the cheapest place to go for Spartacus Criterion.

Due out on April 24th, it's not listed at Movietyme and Play are asking £33.99, and there's just no way I'm going to spend that much money on one shiny little disc!

dvdupdate.com don't have any price listings for it yet.

    Cheers peeps. [IMG]

Just noticed Movietyme do have it listed.

But at £29.99 it's just not justifiable for me. [IMG]

Are the "extras" on a Criterion worth the extra in this case?.I know this was an issue with the Yanks, because the region 1 original release was not anamorphic, whereas the region 2 was (first for everthing I guess!).

I think the region 2 version is very good - one of the best I have actually.I`d be interested in others opinions.

I haven't checked to see how much is on the R2 release but I doubt it equals this Criterion:

    Disc 1:

Stunning new 16x9 transfer of the 1991 fully restored Super Technirama version

    Dolby 5.1 surround soundtracks

Audio commentary by producer-actor Kirk Douglas, actor Peter Ustinov, novelist Howard Fast, producer Edward Lewis, restoration expert Robert A. Harris, and designer Saul Bass
    Screenwriter Dalton Trumbo's scene-by-scene analysis

    Additional Alex North score compositions

English subtitles for the deaf and hearing impaired

    Restoration demonstration

    Disc 2:

    Rare deleted scenes

    Vintage newsreel footage

1960 promotional interviews with Jean Simmons and Peter Ustinov

1992 video interview with Peter Ustinov

    Behind-the-scenes "gladiatorial school" footage

The 1960 documentary The Hollywood Ten, plus archival documents about the blacklist

    Original storyboards by Saul Bass

Hundreds of production stills, lobby cards, posters, print ads, and a comic book

    Sketches by director Stanley Kubrick

    Original theatrical trailer

    ----

Unfortunately, I'm just not prepared to spend 30 quid on a single DVD [IMG]

Oooooooo..... but it does sound nice though doesn't it...?? [IMG]

Just done a price search and a few US sites are selling it between $32-40 so when I've got more time this evening I'll investigate.

Right, the cheapest I've seen this at is about £26 inc. delivery from www.absound.ca

Anyone know anywhere else or is this about as good as it's gonna get?

Having just forked out £25 for The Rock I don't really want to make a habit of paying over the odds for discs, but this criterion disc does seem a bit special doesn't it?! [IMG]

No question mate - the Criterion has bags more extras - but they come at a price !.

The region 2 is 2.35:1 anamorphic ,dolby digital 5.1, "uncut and fully restored".

The only extras are some trailers and some production notes , but if you just want the movie - the picture and sound on the region2 are excellent(considering the age of the film !).

I think there is a review on the database here - may be worth checking out (and you could probably pick it up for about £12-£13 using one of the current high street promotions)

For whistles and bells though, no question the Criterion will win hands down !.
