The Radio Shack ones are adequate for most purposes. The only snag is their bass response isn't too good. I.e. innaccurate.

The price is great though and even Dolby film engineers use them for quick checks.

£24.99 for the analogue version or if you must have the digital readout etc. £39.99

So I guess to use one of those, you sit in your listening position, run the test tones and change the channel levels till the tones are all at the same level.

Maplins is more expensive for buying SPL. They told me they don't sell the analog ones anymore, so I bought the digital one for about £50.

It's amazing how much difference it make when you set your channel levels using SPL, rather than going by ear. I had no idea that I had my rear speakers too low (they seemed fine by ear) until when I tested them with the device. I can now hear so much extra that I never knew was there before.

Now all I have to do if figue out the best way to use it.

Any advice ie do I sit it in one postion and leave it there for all the speakers or point it at each speaker when testing?

Put it at ear height in the 'hot-seat' position. Don't wave it about except for experimenting as this will affect the readings due to cancellations caused by reflections off the walls, standing waves and so on. The mic is nominally omni-directional but this is a very nominal omni. You may want to try pointing it at the ceiling. The great thing is to try it, get used to the way it behaves when pointed in different directions and use your ears as well. It's probably obvious, but use 'C' weighting, slow response.

    Hope this helps
