R2 PQ often beats R1 these days.

Superbit is usually better than Standard.

So has anyone been able to compare the PQ of Superbit R1 v R2?

The region 1 Superbit picture quality is superb and i disagree with the notion region 2 picture quality beats region 1, don't forget speed up on sound is an issue to some and censorship is also an issue and europe got a version of Spiderman 2 which was slightly altered and was missing a blink or you will miss it headbutt sequence and i do literally mean blink or you will miss it.

I think the best bargains and some of the best versions of films are coming from asia and region 2 Japan ( expensive ) and the region 3 parts of the world where you will find quality but also no speed up issues as they also use NTSC and i'll take 3:2 pulldown over speed up any day of the week.

I have the Japanese Region 2 superbit and I thought it looked amazing.

I have a feeling that the master for this could in fact be HD since Sony have already used Spiderman 2 to show off their new Blu Ray players. So im guessing that there is a HD Master of Spiderman 2, Much like the T2 Extreme Edition DVD.

I think the PQ on the superbit is really poor. It lacks detail in spades :( Compared to other recent releases such as ROTK ED its a big let down

Oh and I wouldnt agree that PAL is always better, dont forget the source material for the majority of films is matered with NTSC in mind so transcoding that to PAL can be detrimental :lesson:

Return of the King has more detail than Spiderman 2 Superbit ? i don't think so in fact i'll stick my head on the block and say Return of the King has some slight filtering of the high frequencies in order to fit all the different soundtracks in but Spiderman 2 is unfiltered and retains all the high frequency, the softness you refer to is baffling as it has detail in spades and is one of the best transfers of last year.

Detail regarding PQ, not SQ Foxy :) As for audio, the audio on ROTK is truly reference class end of story (In my opinion of course :) )

I have to come down on the side of "one of the best picture qualities I've ever seen from DVD" for the R1 Superbit item.

How many of you have actually seen the R2 japanese Superbit?

Thunder: I cant beleive you said it lacks quality!

I also wonder how do you make comparisons for these different versions of the same movie. Do you use the same set up for all or not.

Personally I use Denon 3910 via DVI to my 42" Fujitsu Plasma.
    @ 1080i.

As I said in my previous post, the quality is close to high def and I think thats bcoz the japanese R2 superbit takes its master from the HD version of the Film Sony made in the past to show off its Blu Ray technology.

What is the source for the R1 (US) and R2 (UK)?

If people are using different players and displays with either analog or digital conections I think its a little difficult to make comparisons accurately.

Well Im confused, so Im gonna have to watch it again and see if I'd had too much beer that night  Im running 720p for NTSC material (768p for PAL) frequency matched. The image I get from my Barco/Lumagen/Tag is normally nothing short of jaw dropping and I just remember being disappointed with SM2

I was talking about picture quality when i say high frequencies are filtered slightly i meant picture high frequencies NOT sound you misunderstood me.

Return of the King has a great soundtrack.

I have to agree with Thunder on this one, got the region 1 superbit, and I thought the picture quality was very average at best, or maybe its because its come from asia and I got ripped off with some low quality version, but it was my 1st superbit title, and if this is the quality, Im pretty sure I wont be buying anymore, although I had 5th Element on the same order which hasnt yet arrived.

Thats a fair point Thunder, was just a little disappointed on my first outing, however, looking forward to the 5th Element, I dont know why, but I must be one of the few that has never seen this film, even the wife has seen it, and is looking forward to it in glorious (i hope) superbit.

Other forums have said the SpiderMan 2 Superbit is the best picture of all the versions out there.

Either doesnt bode well for other versions, or Thunder and myself, have had far too much ale.

Thunder, confirmed, Fifth Element has arrived, popcorn time, with Ale of course. Will let you know what I think on the morrow.

Quickly demo'd Spiderman Superbit as that has just arrived, and thats a better picture than Spiderman 2, looks like I got ripped off on my Superbit then. Anyone recommend a good honest place to get this R2 Japan Superbit ?

Yeah i'd like to know a good R2 Jap dvd supplier. It must be one that offers an english website of some sort. I've used cdjapan.co.jp before who were superquick. Ordered Thursday, DVD arrived Tuesday. Any others?

okay update, i just visited Yesasia and they do free delivery for orders over $39 and guarantee tax free.
