I watched the region 2 version of Spiderman 2 last night and found it to be very poor picture quality (very grainy in parts with some compression visible).

I then decided to see what the capacity was with dvdshrink and was surprised to find the film is less than 4.5gb :thumbsdow

What is the point in releasing a 2 disc version when they don't even bother to use the full capacity of a dual layer disc.

This film when I watched it at the cinema had really good picture quality, but not as good as the blue-ray demo of the trailer I recently saw :)

Has anyone seen the region1 superbit version?

My R1 Superbit version was posted from CD-WOW yesterday, so should get it Monday or Tuesday. I'll check it when it arrives and get back to you on PQ.

Reviews of the R1 Deluxe Two Disc and the Superbit on R1 should be posted sometime today hopefully.
I was a little disappointed with the picture quality on the Two Disc R1.

The region 3 is the same. As soon as I started to play it I noticed horrible compression artefacts during the opening credits. Upon checking the disc contents only about 5.5gigs was used total. This is ridiculous as there is over 2gigs worth of space available that is just left unused.

Obviously a cheap ploy to get people to part with their hard earned for the superbit version. Leaving 2gb free, is very poor.

Indeed. 5 years ago I could forgive this but not nowadays. Bitrates can be worked out so that no space is wasted.

I found that the picture improved a lot further on in the movie, at the begining, during the credits there is awful compression!! And some of the dimly lit indoor scenes were woeful!!!! But, from about 30-45mins into the movie the picture quality appeared to improve. Might get the superbit version too, as my DVD and TV are fairly ruthless when it comes to badly produced discs :(

To be fair, I noticed the compression artefacts during the opening credits on my projector which obviously produces a big picture. The rest of the film looked ok, but the picture isn't particularly sharp in the first place.

I got the SuperBit version of Spiderman 2 yesterday from PlayUSA, gonna watch it tonight, will get back to you about PQ later on tonight. I always try to get SuperBit as their DVD’s rock for picture quality and they come with DTS sound, which is a must imho. :)

    Hi,

Do you think the reason for this is so people buy the superbit version?, hopefully others do not follow suit and produce average PQ dvds and then follow up with a superbit.

Spiderman2 was one of the biggest movies this year, and having lots of digital effects. shame it did not extend to the PQ.

No excuse for Columbia NOT to release a Superbit 2 disc edition and commentaries take up VERY LITTLE space and the original region 1 Superbit has a commentary track.

Columbia sucks and its all about making money as a 2.5 edition has already been announced ( no doubt a normal version followed 6 months later by a superbit with much better pic quality )

    Hey again,

Just watched my SuperBit DVD of Spidey 2, amazing picture quality and DTS sound as ever with a SuperBit dvd.

    During slow scenes: 5Mbps - 6Mbps
    Main Action scenes: 6Mbps - 8.5Mbps (Max)
    End Credits: 0.25Mbps - 5Mbps

    Disc Size: 6.82GB
Why they couldn't use the full disc is beyond me, a DTS ES 6.1 track would have been nice, or they could have included a French 5.1 track, as they had room on the DVD.

As for the film itself, I think I prefer the Original, but thats just my opinion, 2 each his own, right?
I thought the elevator scene was funny though "Nice spidey costume" heh :D

So a disc that is advertised on the fact that no bits go to waste still has a gig of space on it? What are Sony playing at?

At the risk of sounding like a townie, Innit! heh

I was a little shocked like, thought they could have kept the bitrate at a solid 7Kbps is they had used the whole disc. Even more if they ditch the DD5.1 and just use DTS.

I just wish they would do what other studios do as a matter of routine and give us the best pic quality possible and DTS on a standard release, and stop deliberately holding back on pic quality so they can release a "Superbit" edition and crow about the superior quality.

Remember - "Superbit" is a marketing strategy, not a technical standard.

The "2.5" version is yet another cynical marketing ploy and extremely irritating. It amounts to about a minute or so of new footage apparently, which is just rubbing salt in the wounds. I know the studios are all out to squeeze the extra bucks from us, but Sony/Columbia really take the p**s (in both DVD and CD marketing). :thumbsdow

Having dvdshrink on my hcpc is a revelation as it shows the actual gigs used on a film and although i am not a superbit expert i havent yet seen one that utilises the full 8 gigs.

Spiderman 2 is such an awful movie, don't really care about going into the picture quality !

Part 2 should have been called "A Spidey who lost the plot"

heh heh, I wondered how long it would take for someone to say it ;)
If it wasnt for the fact my two little uns watch it all the time i would never have:

    a) watched it myself
    b) be getting the superbit version ( i have to give my mate his copy back at SOME time!)

but I have to say, i think I prefer the second to the original.

    OK...I have worked it out!

$ony own Columbia Tristar, they release all thier forthcoming titles in low bitrate to make DVD not look so good.
Then they re-release all thier titles on Blue-ray (oh..and they also own blue-ray ;) ) and make lots more $$$$$$$

Haven't they also just purchased another major Film company so they can make more $$$.

    Great thinking $ony :smashin:

compression and bitrate aside the spidy 2 pic is intentionally over contrasted/grainy etc it was added in post production some shots look worse than others i.e. loses detail in faces etc. but it varies from scene to scene some shots look near HDTV some look they were shot by spielberg for insertion into private ryan! even the hdtv version of spidy 1 looks the same i think they are trying to get them all to match up in the end
just a warning and (i dont think anyone here will actually do this!) dont set up the colours/fleshtones of your tvs/projectors using spidy 1 or 2 as a guide as they are totally out of whack :suicide:
