I'm a tad (ha!) arachnophobic, and was wondering what, if anything, is good at repelling them. I've seen those things that plug into the wall and make a 'force field' of repellant, but it seems a bit suspect.

Want to sort myself out before summer arrives and the little bastards ruin my life.

    Cheers,
    Jack.

    :lease:

My Dad swears that you keep them out by placing conkers in the corners of each room!

That's correct. It really does work!

If you haven't got any, which you probably haven't, you can buy a spider repellant containing horse chestnut extract. You just spray it in each corner of the room...spiders begone!

Stop being such a big puff!!

Spiders aren't even attracted to humans.

Plus, spiders help to keep the fly population down in your house.

I think it is usually spelled "poof" right?

I hate spiders too...if I see one in the house I have to (get my wife to) turn the entire place upside down until the beast is found and dispatched with a shoe. I remember once when I was at home on my own and there was one in the middle of the bathroom floor. I had to throw shoes at it from the hallway until it was flattened and then leave the body on the floor until my wife got home to get rid of it.

Luckily I also have a couple of brave cats which like nothing more than a spot of spider hunting, although they don't seem to like the taste of every variety. My wife also has to clean up the aftermath of a cat vs. spider attack, tag-team battle.

I bought a spider repellent in a can but never used it.

I had to in the autumn as the front of my house was covered in them. It was a mess. You would hose them down and in an hour they'd all be back.

Also, there is a gas vent in my living room and about 4 times during the autumn nights I was sitting watching the TV in the dark when a movement on the floor caught my eye. Each time it was the biggest spider I have ever seen. Not bulky but very thin and gangly - scared the bejesus outta me (and I'm usually ok with small to medium spiders).

But they have all vanished now so even if I find the repellent I can't give a review of it. But will need it for next summer/autumn I guess.

Must admit i'm not a fan of spiders either - i find the best way is to drop a pint class over the top of them then slide a postcard under the glass to stop the blighter's escaping, them dump em' down the garden.

About a year or so ago i was sat up in bed drinking a cup of tea, when all of a sudden the biggest bloomin spider i have ever seem crawled out from under the covers right near my arm  had to dog me tea almost burning my mouth out and slammed the cup down over it.
Another time in bed again fluffing my pillows, under the second pillow was a spider  just think if i had never seen it it could have crawled in my ear or up my nose or something!

As I say I'm not really afraid of spiders, mainly because I spent a week in Corfu a few years ago and when I saw what size of 'things' that hang around you and your room over there I realised that we get it ok over here.

But you would still get a shock if a spider danders out of somehwere unexpected, like under your duvet cover !!

I'm scared of spiders too, but even after going to Corfu 4 times in the last 5 years, I'm still no better with them.

Out of interest, where abouts in Corfu did you go? I was in Kassioppi, really liked it.

    I'm not ... *sniff* ... I'm NOT A PUFF! [IMG] Wwaaaaaaaaaa! [IMG]

Strange thing is though, its only spiders that I'm really scared of, centipedes, cockroaches, moths or beetles etc. don't bother me. Just those damn spiders, must have had a bad experience as a kid.

Not attracted to humans? Try telling them that!
And spiders are good because they keep the fly population down? My arse pipe.
It's just down to me not leaving turds on my carpet.

I did exactly the same thing  Saw a huge one in my room run across the skirting (that's one of the creepiest things, you only see them in the corner of your eye and they're fast as lightning). Grabbed my work shoe, jumped onto the bed (safest place of course) waited for it to make its move from behind the cupboard. Stood there for about 30min, rigid with terror . Then in the corner of my eye a flash of black by the bin, damnit! how did it get there without me seeing?! But then, its fatal error, it moved into the open ground. The perfect chance for me to unleash my artillery shoe. Hit it the first time, but it didn't die, it tried to limp back to the bin. but I got it on the second hit.

    Champion!

I can never understand people who are scared of non poisonous spiders. It seems really daft especially as we are thousands of times bigger than them (if not more) and they are harmless to us and are normally scared of humans.

How manly. I bet your girlfriend is happy she has you to protect her.

I just can't understand how grown men can be scared of something so harmless? It's not like its going to eat you alive, while you sleep or bite you and crawl under your skin.

Now, if we're living in Aussie land, i might be concerned, as they have some dangerous ones there.

Ermones. Ok for 1 visit but won't be back.

I could not believe some of the insects etc I saw there. We left the door of the balcony open the odd day to get some air in, and we were visited by little lizards, and bugs of all sorts. Needless to say the door was firmly shut after the first few days and the aircon run for the rest of the holiday.

Yup, I'm scared of them too. When I see one, I freeze up and won't stop staring at the place where it disappeared to. All the while I talk myself into killing it. This involves rolling up my trouser legs. Putting some hefty shoes on, grabbing the mop and a slipper in one hand. Then I start to fish for it. Man, it's scary as ****.

Urrrrrgh, just thinking about them creeps me out.

Totally agree. Yes spiders aren't the prettiest things to look at but why are people scared of them. They are harmless and tiny. IMO its a stupid phobia, its like been scared of an apple or an orange. :suicide:

Well most phobias are silly so saying that doesn't really help the situation. For those that say put a pint glass over them etc I can't get that close to them in the first place. The only ones I don't mind killing are the ant sized ones.

Hense the term irrational fear  .... jeez.

I know a spider isn't going to kill me, but its an irrational fear, often brougt about by bad experiences when we are younger, which we have no control over.

All phobias are stupid by definition! :clown:

For those of you that don't like spiders, is it only spiders that you have a dislike towards? I generally don't like any insects and will always kill any insect. I don't care what type it is, I hate them all. There is just something about them.
