Just got this email from sonypictures:

OSCAR NOMINEE THOMAS HADEN CHURCH CAST AS
THE NEW NEMESIS IN SONY PICTURES' AND MARVEL STUDIOS' "SPIDER-MAN 3"

Latest Adventure set to debut worldwide on May 4, 2007

CULVER CITY, CA March 22, 2005 - Thomas Haden Church, who was most
recently nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in
"Sideways", has been cast as Spider-Man's new archenemy in the next
chapter of the "Spider-Man" adventure, it was announced by director Sam
Raimi and producers Laura Ziskin and Marvel Studios' Avi Arad.

"Spider-Man 3", which is scheduled for release on May 4, 2007, will
reunite the successful team that was responsible for the first two
blockbuster films. The franchise has grossed more than $1.5 billion in
worldwide ticket sales and the new film will again reteam director
Raimi, producers Ziskin and Arad, and actors Tobey Maguire as Peter
Parker/Spider-Man and Kirsten Dunst as M.J..

Production on "Spider-Man 3" is scheduled to begin early next year.

"In addition to the on-going relationship between Peter Parker and
M.J., these films are driven by the great actors who have brought our
villains to life," said Raimi. "Thomas Haden Church will be a fantastic
and challenging new nemesis and we all look forward to working with
    him."

The identity of the new villain is being kept secret and while
speculation is rampant about which character is being called into
action, the studio will not comment on the casting beyond confirming
    Church.

Since his star-making role in "Sideways", Church has been in demand.
The actor is voicing one of the characters in the upcoming animated
film "Charlotte's Web", and he recently appeared in Columbia Pictures'
"Spanglish". Church previously appeared in such other films as "George
of the Jungle", "330 Miles to Graceland", and "Tombstone". In 2003, he
also starred in, co-wrote and directed the comedy "Rolling Kansas".
From 1990 to 1995, Church played Lowell Mather in the TV series
    "Wings".

I've got a feeling Max Carnage may make an appearance :) along with Venom  The Lizard has been introduced in his human form already, so we may see him too.

Nah, probably Goldfish Bowl head aka Mysterio. Or possibly Kraven. Can't really have Carnage without Venom first for starters.

Mind you - all in favour of the Sinister Six ?

Venom in the first half, and Carnage in the second :D

Rhino, Wolf and it might even be cool if we see a crossover of heroes, a cameo by the X-Men or fantastic four perhaps? :D Especially cool if they turn up to help out against the aforementioned sinister six :).

Lets hope it keeps the momentum going, I really enjoyed the first two.

    Check this out!

Now obviously this aint 100% conformation of the new villains are but it's the most i've heard from anyone involved in Spidey 3 so far.

I believe Sam Remi has been quoted as saying something along the lines of "he's not a fan of Venom as he's not that interesting a character" correct me if i'm wrong (double-bluff???).

I've never been a comic book reader so how interesting he is I havent a clue. But from what little I do know of the history of the Spider-man universe is that Venom and/or Carnage would be the most visualy spectacularly villain/s on the big screen without question. Plus i'm sure they could make him into an interesting character. I'm sure the fanboys wouldnt mind them improving a character ...... would they

Well, if it is going to be Venom, there is a lot to cover, the new symbiote attaching itself to Peter Parker, Eddie Brock and his hatred towards Peter, the way Peter detatches from the Symbiote, and then the Symbiote attaching itself to Eddie Brock.......but.....Venom can't die, as Max Carnage is the spawn of Venom.....well, that is how it goes in the comics I believe.

Venom isn't a character as such, but an Alien being, who doesn't really say much. Agreed, he would be a visually stunning character :), but there would be a lot to cover with both Venom and Man Wolf. Wasn't it Jamesons son who brings back the alien symbiote on a space mission as well? Jamesons son turns out to be Man Wolf.......so much potential :D

    Just a tad 2 far ;)

Not sure about Man-Wolf and Venom, it doesn't gel to me. The first 2 villains have been the equivalent of Magneto for the X-Men or Dr. Doom for FF, so surely it has to be an equally iconic villain? After Gobin and Octopus, Mysterio is probably the next one. Venom would be the "fanboy" choice, but in comparrison he was a relative newcomer to the Spidey World.

Kaz, I think we're all getting guilty of geeking out :)

Symbiote came back with Parker from the Secret Wars, when Parker found out the "costume" was really an alien he got rid of it and it fused with Brock which created Venom. The offshoot of the Symbiote attatched to Cletus Kassidy, the serial killer who became Carnage.

Sooooooooooooo probably best to simplify that whole scenario eh ? :)

Let's just hope they run with something half decent. I'm dreading when they decide that J.J. Jameson puts a bounty on Spidey and Silver Sable appears. Then Daredevil cameos. And Black Cat.

    Hot off IMDB.COM today

Sideways star Thomas Haden Church's villainous alter-ego in the new Spider-Man movie has been revealed, if internet gossip is to be believed. The Oscar nominee will play Venom in Spider-Man 3 in 2007, according to the Pressconnects.Com website. Venom won't be the only Spider-Man arch-enemy in the second sequel - Daniel Gillies' John Jameson character will become Manwolf in the film, according to the reports.

I imagine the script will have to be very tight if they plan to incorporate venom and other villains too. The venom story itself is challenging enough. However, they’ve done a good job in the other films so lets wait and see.

Youll probably find that the Venom symbiote will be a lab experiment gone wrong, there not going too do the secret wars to much story and too many other heros and villians.

I was hoping they would stick to just 1 villian especially seeing as its Venom im kinda hoping they go with the story of the 90's cartoon with getting the Venom symbiote on earth. A shuttle mission to a asteroid winds up with one of the crew getting the symbiote attached to him.

but what about Harry "Hobgoblin" Osbourne? if Venom and Manwolf are the bad guys this time, they must already be planning at least a fourth film since they've already gone to the trouble of setting Harry up as the next Goblin. or are the current rumours all a great big bluff?
like others, i'm a little concerned as to how they'd condense the whole venom origin into one film, let alone one with at least one other villain. somehow, i don't think we'll be seeing spidey in his cool black costume

Let’s just hope it doesn’t degenerate from here. No other film series that I can remember maintains their momentum after the first two. Batman, Terminator, Superman – they all became rubbish after the second film.

Let’s hope that Sony can buck this trend!

Would another Goblin be all that interesting though? I personal thought The Green Goblin was quite a week villain. Doesn't Harry just re-use his daddy's weapons equipment? One of the reasons I preferred Spider-man 2 over the original was Doc Ok, who lets face it was basically the same character as Goblin (IMO of course), just looked better. I wish they hadn't even set up Harry becoming Goblin (yet), unless they do something radical not only with the look but also the abilities it'll be a step back instead of a step forward.

Also I believe this is the last Spider-man Rami's been signed up for. If that's the case id have thought he'd like to go out with a bang. A massively spectacular villain. Between now and when Spider-man 3 is released (2007?) they'll be loads of other comic book movies released, each trying to out-do the last. The bar will be raised and you know, like I know, Spidy will have to come out on top. Villains like Lizard, Rhino, Kraven, Green Goblin 2/Hobgoblin even Man Wolf in my eyes just seem plain compared to the selection of other baddies available.

Now if Rami is to be believed they'll be no Venom. But Sandman and Electro can also cause some real damage  .

Actually wasn't Sandman like a big wuss of a villain in the comics? I heard people say he got his arse handed to him on a regular bassis from Spider-man, often quite embarrassingly too. I say if they can make Sandman into a good character why not Venom?

apparently an actress called Chloe Sevigny is currently trying to land a role as "a blond, buxom" villain, so who would that be? black cat?

Harry could be used as the Hobgoblin to get revenge on Spider-Man. Other plot line is he could again hire someone to take spidie out such as Kraven the Hunter or get Mysterio to frome Spider-Man for crimes.

What ever I think they should bring the Osborn plot to an end.

One reason the Green Goblin was a bit lame was the costume he wore I’ve seen better evil looking villains on Dr Who.

i still like my idea that black cat apparently and venom are all causing their own personal mayhem, then spidey ends up being cornered by them and then the green goblin shows up and instead of finishing spidey off, he teams up with him and they whoop some ass. Of course i'd prefer it if the goblin wasn't in it at all, but why set it up in part 2 if you're not going to use it in part 3?

For a possible cliffhanger ending to ensure people want to see a part 4? Mind you Hobgoblin vs Green Goblin with Spidey in the middle would be interesting?

As to the Chloe Sevigny bit - well Black Cat is the only real option, although she's not really a villain, unless they want to do Silver Sable (Bad move people!). Then again, could be used as Gwen Stacy in a goblin related tale....

Perhaps, as they introduced jameson's son in the second film, they could do it like the Venom Saga cartoon.

If they did it like that, you can see the first 5 minutes of this by watching Species 2!
