Spendor Classic S4/5 Standmount Speaker Review & Comments

I find is somewhat strange you give the looks an entry in the cons list as you actually say
'Now, as I’ve said before, looks are subjective. Things person A likes are not automatically going to be what appeals to person B'. Could we not then give every speaker, or piece of hifi for that matter, an entry in the cons list.

the looks maybe in the cons list for the reviewer because he's not a fan of the looks.

dont forget reviews are the opinion of a reviewer

I do not entirely agree. A review should primarily be based on facts, some measured and yes some subjective. Speakers are probably the hardest part of a hifi system to judge objectively.
Connectivity and features both get an 8 what would need to be different to get a higher score?

sound preferences are subjective. everyone's ears are different.

lack of twin binding posts?

lack of the option for the listener to experiment with ported or blocking ports?

Listened to these the other day at a dealer, with an Arcam SA30 and was very impressed, so much that I ordered a pair. After finding previous speakers a bit forward (Kef R3, Dynaudio Special 40, PMC 21, amongst others), these were a welcome change. Smooth, slightly more laid back, but at the same time really detailed, communicative and natural sounding.

Personally don't want loads of bass (always found Kef R3 a bit overwhelming in my 4m x 4.5m bedroom, for example), and speed and integration more important to me personally. ..but I just hope I'm not gonna be disappointed with the spendor 4/5s at home in terms of bass response, or find them too thin. Certainly at the dealer they seemed adequate. Delivery next week, so time will tell.

Yes only place to try and get an idea if for you is where they will live.

Can look up plenty of speakers reviewed here that get 8 for both and have twin posts and ports.

Ironically, it's because I do like the looks, I've flagged it. Their apperance is very distinctive and thus likely to be more subjectively regarded.

8 is a default value; easy and logical to connect via a variety of speaker cable terminations to. The two higher point values then exist to acknowledge specialist extra features like crossover bypass, star earths and other unusual fitments.

@Ed Selley what range of room dimensions would you typically recommend these for, and ideal listening distance? Thanks

I’d be interested to hear what these sound like with a Lyngdorf 1120 and one or two of their corner subs.

And I will when cash becomes more available.

I’ll have to have them re-veneered in a more modern finish though.

Or sprayed gloss black.

Because I’m a heathen.

Fantastic speakers. Owned them for 6 months now, and they're just so engaging and well balanced. As mentioned in the review, very cohesive and coherent, with a lush, open soundstage. Even the bass, on the whole, is very satisfying as it's so well integrated, fast and punchy. And sub/s can be called upon if greater depth is required.

Amazing speakers for sure, but I’d say they are too expensive in the long run. But I sure what them. Subwoofer is must though.

What are you driving them with Dave?

@ Ed Selley

Might there be a review of these beautiful things any time soon Ed?

I just purchased a pair in walnut. The Spendor Classic 4/5 speakers sound like a perfectly tuned musical instrument that creates a warm, inviting, & intimate space right in front of you. These are masterfully tuned extensions of musical playback. I absolutely love these speakers.
