Not sure if it's the right area on the forum to post this. Ok, after saving for as long as I can rememer, selling most of my body parts (and a little help from the bank  ) I'm finally ready to spend about £6500 on my dream system. I'd apreciate any comments as to what parts you would change, and why. Any recomendations on where to buy in the Midlands as well would be useful. System will comprise:

    Pioneer 435XDE and wall bracket
    Pioneer 868 DVD
    Pioneer VSX 2014i Amp
    Genie 5.1 or Mission M-Cube's
    Marantz RC5400

    Thanks for your comments!

As HD-DVD and BlueRay are less than 1 year away, you could save on the expensive PIO DVD player and buy a Samsung 945 instead, freeing up money for a better speaker package.

This is what i'm really stuck on at the moment. I was orginally going to buy the more expensive DVD recorder with HDMI, but can not justify the high cost making it redundant when, like you mention, HD-DVD is on the way. How much is the Samsung 945? I may drop the 868 in favour of the Pio 668 which is about £450, as I am keen to keep it all Pio for their SR+ infra red link system. What speakers would you upgrade to out of interest?

The Sammy 945 is around 140 quid, big saving. Saw a thread the other day where someone tested PIO/Sammy/Arcam HDMI equiped players and it was close between Sammy and PIO, both better than Arcam. Tests were done on 505XDE. So, for the money the Sammy is spot on, MR via remote control too.

I don't know too much about the speakers that you are looking at, you'd have to give links and prices.

I've got a similar all-pio system (504HDE, 868AVi, 814 amp) and SR+ is not all its cracked up to be. SR+ requires special cables which are only available direct from Pioneer (they're NOT simple mono/stereo jack plugs as with the original SR control system), were only manufactured in November 2004, are damn difficult to get hold of, and cost about £20 each  . And after waiting 6 months to get this cable, none of the features of SR+ worked properly with my amp or screen. The remote control bit worked though I think.

Thats intesting, Mat. It's one of the main reason i've gone the all Pio route, as i'm putting everything in the next room, and operating it all through the TV using SR+. However, I think I may stick in a infra red distribution system though to cope with it. Thanks for letting me know!

If you are looking for a 5.1 speaker set-up you should audition the Castle package - it is extremely good - and has had excellent reviews...

Try Kelkoo or Dealtime. Pixmania are doing the player for £181 inc. P+P. Not sure how P434HDE has seen it for £140 sounds a very good price if you can get it for that little.
In fact it sounds too good to be true for £181 if it is as good as a Pio 868. I have a 505XDE so am thinking about HDMI was going to get a Pio or Denon but may have to have a look at the samsung, after all if it looks good on my 505 in HDMI then why waste another £700.

Ok, taken the plunge and ordered it! I'll let you know what it looks like when I finally purchase the screen as well. I searched the net but could not get it down to £140 either, so I got it from Pixmania. Seems to be the only place selling it anyway!

With regard's to the castle speakers, i'll take a look at them. I must admit i've heard others discuss their merits on this forum, but not seen a great deal about them in the mags. I'll take a look though.

I really appreciate your advice here guys, i't's already saved me a fortune!

You lucky so and so! I'm having to sell body parts to get mine. And when i get it I still can't afford it. But you only live once!!!

I'm going to audition some Mission M-Cube's as soon as somethere is actually selling them, as well as the Castles mentioned. Last thing needed is a decent hardwired infra red syste to control the whole lot through a cabinet. Anyone used one?
