There's a little black speck of summink (grit, dust, schmutz) in the viewfinder of my SLR (Canon 450D). It's about the size of one of the AF dots.

It's more annoying than anything, the speck does not show up on images nor go away when I change lenses, but nonetheless it is bugging me something rotten!

Any suggestions as to how to get rid of it (or relatedly, but less important, how the heck it got in there!?)

Many thanks. Mirror was okay but found the speck on the focusing screen shown on the link. Unfortunately my cack handed attempts to remove it have made things worse and the autofocus LEDs are now really dim, and seem to have thrown out the dioptre/eyesight adjustment as well!

Should have just left well alone....

What about an air duster to blow it out?

Haven't got one, but could work I suppose, I'd be more worried about blowing it further 'in' i.e. onto the sensor etc than 'out'. Anyway I got rid of the large speck but replaced it with a couple of smaller bits of dust, which I then tried to get rid of. Turns out all that wiping, even with a microfibre cloth, can apparently ruin the etching on the focusing screen, which is why the autofocus aid lights aren't showing up now.

Feel a bit like Father Ted fixing the dent in his car!
