i am about to order a set of cantons (2xcd100/1xcd50/4xcd10/1xas22sc).

this is the wall where the main sofa will be

if what i have read is right, the surround right and left speakers should go high up tilting down on the side walls, and the surround back right and left should be at the same height on the rear wall behind the sofa again tilting down.

will that acheive the optimum sound?

also, are presence speakers worth having? my yamaha amp has outputs for them, but im not sure if they will be worth having in the system?

    cheers!

thank you richie, but that page only shows the surround right & left, not the rear centres, as in 7.1.

Under the diagram there are 6 options. Click on the Dolby Digital EX and Dolby Pro Logic IIx.

    6.1 or 7.1 Setup
The most advanced home theater systems feature six (with Center Back) or seven (with Left Back/Right Back) full-range channels that allow viewers to take full advantage of Dolby Digital EX soundtracks and Dolby Pro Logic® IIx matrix-surround decoding technology. Both of these processes add surround information for greater realism and more dramatic effects.

    thanks for the advice.

my main problem is that with the sofa being right against the rear wall, the feature of 6 or 7.1 would be lost being so close to it.

all of the diagrams i have seen suggest sitting in the middle of the room, all well and good in a dedicated home cinema, but not so practical in a living room.

also, any suggestions about the 2 front presence speakers? id like to know quite soon as that will make the difference of ordering 4 or 6 cd10's.

    thanks again!

where the plasma is being mounted out of interest:-

roughly in the middle of the chimney breast, then im having a false wall built out to the same depth as the screen to hide wires etc. the fire is also being covered over, so it will be a flat wall.

cant wait to get it all done!

You can put the dipoles at the side (facing inwards) and the rears above/ behind you.

my room is actually exactly the same design and probably size as yours and i have my 7.1 system set up the same way you want yours. tv on the chimney wall with front speakers either side and the rears sit to the left and right of my sofa which is directly opposite the screen, the are dipoles, and the centre rears are placed directly behind me. the sofa is pulled a little way from the rear wall so as to recline and the speakers are just under about six feet, 5 and a half maybe, from the ground which is about two feet above me when seated. this, whether right or wrong, is actually very goodand really does give great surround sound, although i am dying to buy a sound level optimiser to ensure everything is present and correct. hope i helped out.
