I've be pottering about getting a htpc for a few months now since selling my wdtv live hub an d discovering xbmc.

Currently using xbmc in a makeshift setup via laptop hooked to TV/amp etc. I'm also now thinking of making into a gaming rigg also. Is it possible to build a PC that fits both profiles but can be quiet enough for htpc use?

Yes you just need to buy quiet components - best to go with a Socket 1155 cpu as they are power efficient so require less cooling which means less noise - you will need a quiet cooler - I use the Arctic Alpine 11 Pro which is under £10 and very quiet. Most quality PSUs are pretty silent and a power efficient graphics card such as the HD7770 or HD7850 (or Nvidia equivalent) will be silent during HTPC duties. And also use just an SSD if possible to avoid any hard drive noise.
