    Hey guys.

    Right, here's the dig.

I'm at 6th form, doing my second year of A levels. Now, for this, I've got to do a project called Product Study. This is where you take a product, research it, find out how it's made, how it performs etc etc.

Well, as I love my home cinema, though it may not be the best in the world. I've decided to do mine on Speakers, and, with that, Moniter Audio Speakers.

I don't know much, if anything. So i'm looking at you guys for some information and direction, as, let's face it, some of you are boffs when it comes to speakers.

So, can you guys help me out? Maybe by writing up something you know about speakers? It could be about anything, materials, production, performance, how they actually work (that could be a start) Connectors, types of cones, anything would be highly appreciated.

I'll even give you a mention in my project under research. :)

Also, pointing me in some directions of helpful websites would be so helpful

Thanks for your time guys, i'm sure this won't be the last topic you'll see from me on this project.

The first thing I would consider is what is the thrust of your paper. There are many topics which you could investigate from production line issues to marketing or R&D. The greater the focus of your title the easier it will be to write. For example, although marketing is connected to production, if you concentrate on production you could for example look at Manufacturing Requirements Planning.

You mention Monitor Audio, do you have a contact at MA who can assist you or if not how do you intend getting specific details.

Please think of my questions as a way of avoiding unnecessary work later on.

Narrow down your project topic from "something to do with speakers" to something much more specific, which can be completed in the time available. Is it speaker design ? The manufacturing process ? Acoustic testing ? Lots of possibilities! Background reading on speakers should give you ideas. Useful books might be:
-- Designing, Building, and Testing Your Own Speaker http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/007069429X/
-- Introduction to Loudspeaker Design http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/096637732X/
    -- Testing Loudspeakers http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1882580176/
    Other books listed at http://www.trueaudio.com/books.htm
Should be lots of possible experiments for speakers - some ideas at http://www.phys.unsw.edu.au/~jw/I&Iexperiments.pdf&e=7385

Has your tutor mentioned the words "literature search" ? You could describe this as "finding out what clever bods have already written about this topic". See "Guide to Literature Searching" at http://www.ulst.ac.uk/library/magee/searching.htm
"The Management of a Student Research Project" book might also help. Aimed at university level projects, but should still be relevant. Probably available from your local library, if not they can arrange an inter-library loan. http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0566084902
    Sample chapter at http://www.studentskills.org/manresearch.pdf

Be wary of what you read on the internet. Is it written by a self appointed guru who's read a couple of magazines but doesn't really know what he's talking about, or is it by someone with a solid background in speaker design and construction ? And don't take my word as gospel on how to conduct your project - speak to your tutor! Whilst you will know more than them about your specific topic, they know more than you or I about what they want from your project.

    Best of luck!
    Andy.
