Hi,
i got Sony STR-DH820 reviver and i'm looking for 5.1 speakers for it. This is my very 1st Receiver and NO idea about speakers. Please tell me a good speaker package. i'm thinking to get YAMAHA NSP40 but its Maximum power handling is 100watts RMS but my new receiver says 110w.....is it OK to use lower or higher watts speakers?

Many Thanks

What's your budget?

I'm using mine with Tannoy's SFX speakers (7.1 set-up) but that's really because I already had those speakers and wasn't in the market for new ones. The Tannoys can deliver a lot of whallop for their size and I have what would probably pass as a medium-to-large-sized living room.

However, I got the Sony because of its value as a future-proof receiver so I'll be upgrading the speakers before I look at changing the amp. Ergo, my speakers don't reveal the full potential of the STR-DH820 even though a modest speaker package will still sound pretty darned great with this receiver.

Well, the Tannoy SFX system is going for £200 at Richer Sounds which I realise is fifty notes outside your budget. However, Richers have also got the Pioneer SHS100 for £120. Like the Tannoy set-up, these are satellite speakers so they've aesthetically pleasing (very important if you have a female partner living with you!) but you'll need to factor in the need for four speaker stands (unless you want to put your surrounds on a pair of bookshelves or, even better, get them wall-mounted). Also, consider some decent speaker cable as the cable that comes with the speakers is little better than basic doorbell wire.

I know it's a little late to say this but it's worth considering in future: price up everything before you buy. I swear by Richer Sounds, personally, but there are other very helpful retailers out there. You'll find them listed in the back of the specialist hi-fi and home cinema magazines.

Thanks for the great advice mate. I'm thinking to go with Yamaha or pioneer. But I don't know which one to chose from.I'm waiting for boxing day sale.

Thanks again.

Wish u a happy xmas!!!

Glad I could help, fella. Hope you get a good deal come Boxing Day :)

And all the very best to you!

Have you considered building the speakers up slowly? Hence you could use your current budget to buy the front pair (or maybe 2 pairs of Wharfedal Diamond 9.0/9.1s so getting surround sound via 4.0) and then get the other speakers as funds allow. Now this does not give you full 5.1 to start but will get you a much better system in the long run and a speaker set that will get the best from your reciever.

Wharfadal 9.1 looks amazing and good reviews..my receiver is 110w per channel. I'm thinking to go for Yamaha nsp40 5.1 package. Do u think I cam mix diamond 9.1 with it to archive 7.1 sound?

You really want the front 3 speakers to be the same make/model to get a good front soundstage. You could use the Yamaha sub and rear speakers but I would not use the Yamaha centre with the Wharfedales.
