Castle use real wood veneers and the finish on their speakers is something to behold.

or JVC wood cones?

they are quite cute those wood cones...heh....dunno why tho, something tells me you need a controlled atmosphere for them.....if it heats up and down too much too quick wood warps, even if its varnished or whatever..that could suck...lol

If you're looking for multi-layered wood veneer speakers try www.av123.com. Their products are sturdy, sonically sound eyecatchers at sometimes unbelievably low prices. Subwoofer specialist SVS uses them for their enclosures (link).

Here a new av123 product that will hit the market the coming months:

(link)

Mini Stratas for $1595 per pair. Next to it is Mark L. Schifter, the man who makes it all happen.

Some info: "The 8" woofer is tuned to 28Hz and has a F3 of 27Hz. The porting is 4" x 1.5" and is 30" long. The 5.25" midbass coupler is XO'd at 650Hz and the 8" neo to tweeter is 4KHz."

ps: The final model will be 3" shorter.

controlled atmosphere ??? that really knackered the careers of Steinway and Stradivarius didnt it...............

This raises another point about wood, it is very good at transmitting sound which is not a good thing for a speaker cabinet

hmm.....of course, i forgot, the shell of a piano is made of wood that needs to be measured and accurate to thousandths of an inch or not perform properly.........and likewise for a violin......

however, pianos do if they are moved around a lot or stored in too cold an atmosphere need to have repairs done and various wooden and metal parts replaced.....altho not so much to do with the sound as much as making sure they dont fall apart......this i know because a friend of mines fathers business is repairing pianos as well as teaching piano and in the past doing various other things like composing and playing in quartets, jazz bands and orchestras.....

(have you never been advised to keep wooden speakers, whether all wood or veneered, away from radiators? the main reason being a radiator is more often than not near windows......radiator makes the wood warm, radiator goes off, colder air/condensation from windows chills the wood and with possible water vapour seeping through cracks/scratches in the lacquer, then it warms up again, wood soaks in the water, freezes again and expands more, wood warps, shape changes, veneer can peel off, or solid wood can warp causing gaps.....this applies to a lot of products made of wood, can take a while to happen as this kind of wood is fairly thick...but speaker cones made of wood will not be thick, therefore chance of warping if atmosphere changes too much too quick too often is much higher....and will colour the sound or possibly even crack the cones completely eventually.......)
