Has anyone ever heard one of these?
Apparently they're supposed to retail at £2k but can be had for £750 at the moment.
    The spec is here.
Any opinions on whether it would be a good buy?
I'm after a decent improvement over my Quad L-ite sub.

    Can't comment on the perfomance.

However, it can be had for much less than £750 on a well known market place. There's also an option to 'offer the best price'. Can't help think that it was optimistically priced in the first instance though.

I agree with that, but I'm thinking a decent sub with 12" driver and 500 watt amp over priced at £2000 won't be bad for under £750!

    Hi All

This is my first time in the forums since joining recently. I'm also looking for a new sub and only yesterday demmoed the Tantra TS10 with MA GS60 5.0 setup at my local sevenoaks. It was awesome. I would think the Tantra TS12 should be even better still. With that in mind I'd like to know where I can get one for under £750.

    Thanks in advance

Well I've decided to take the plunge and bought myself a TS12 brand new for a lot less than £750!
It should be delivered tomorow so when it's set up I'll let you know how it sounds.
While I'd never pay £2k for one, it's got to be worth a punt at this price..

I've bought one of these too (from ebay again). I will be very interested to try it out and hear others' opinions. The guy from the shop (Laservision) insisted it is a £2k-level sub, and this was after I'd bought and paid for it. He said the suppliers were clearing out a big job lot, hence the price. Still, we'll see....

Thanks, I'll do that and let you know. Did you get anything else as part of the deal or was it just the sub?

    Just the sub.
I originally offered £400 but that wasn't accepted.

OK, so these sell for around monolith money (it does not matter what the sales man "insisted" they sell for). :)

Lets remember that this box is not very big and the freq range quoted starts at 40hz. For the same money you could have got a monolith that is tuned to 20hz and I think the larger monolith will likely be louder and better for HC use.

HAs any one who has bought the TS12 got a monolith or a friend with a monolith to compare to?

The specs talk about the low pass crossover starting at 40 Hz but I'm not sure whether this means the frequency response only goes down to 40 Hz. I haven't seen any data on this. With a 500W sub of this size I'd be surprised if it didn't go lower.

Yep, you're right. I've re-checked their website and I can't find any data which states what the subs freq response is, although their full range speakers have a claimed 20hz capability so, if this is true one would like to assume their subs should duplicate or improve on this metric.

It is a £2k sub. I've done a quick Google search and although I didn't find a TS12 for sale, StoneAudio list the inferior TS10 at £1500. Whether it's worth that or not is an entirely different matter. The 40Hz is not the limit of it's frequency range - it's the lowest setting you can set the crossover. If it didn't go below that it would be pointless having that as the crossover setting. I would have thought given it's spec it should be certainly be delving at least in to the low 20s.

For me, the TS12 is right at the limit of what I can accomodate in terms of size so whether or not a monolith is better is irrelevant. I'd be comparing to an XLS300 or SVS SB12+ or similar. I suspect given it's retail price and the fact that it's a ported box with a 500watt amp and 12" driver it should compare very favourably.
The chap at Laservision assured me it was a very good sub that not only went very deep but was also tight and fast. He said that it was an absolute steal at the price I paid. This was after I'd purchased so there was really no need for him to tell me that. Laservision are Cedia award winning installers and deal in stuff like Lexicon so they should have some idea of what they're talking about.
Mine arrived today and I've connected it up but not had chance to calibrate or listen to it yet.
Initial impressions on the apparent quality are good. It compares favourably with my Quad Lite and anyone with experience of that will know it's a very high finish.
Once I get it up and running proper I'll let you know how it sounds.

Doesn't sound good from the description of the one in the classifieds-buzzing from up close and a sound like an internal fan being emitted from the unit.

    We will differ then. :)

These are being sold new for around £400-£450 so in my books, these are not a £2k sub, they're a sub £500 unit. :)

I think that they are bankrupt stock as most of units in USA seem to be sold as liquidation specials

We're getting into semantics here. The unit has retailed at £2k new; the key question is whether it should have done. Mine arrives tomorrow and I'll be comparing it with my present sub that is, by a happy coincidence, a little over £2k new. Will be interesting , and for £400 I couldn't resist the experiment.

I'll also be interested to hear from others that compare the TS12 against other, better-known subs.

I can see the points both crobo and tony are making, and I don't see that they should be mutually exclusive, just looking at it from a different angle.

E.g. The MS 309i is often recommended as a good budget sub, because it's now selling way below it's original RRP. It's compared with subs selling at it's new price point, but it's still of interest that it was more expensive to begin with, as people can reasonably expect/hope that they may be getting more for their money than a retail sub starting out at this new price point.

It doesn't matter what discount you can get, the fact of the matter is it IS a £2k sub. Just because you can get it cheaper doesn't mean it's no longer a £2k sub.
You can buy it for £2k - well £1986 anyway - here, and as I posted earlier Stone Audio will sell you the lesser TS10 for £1500.

If people were selling off bankrupt stock Aston Martins for £15k it wouldn't make it a £15k car.

As to whether it's a good £2k sub, I suspect not. You can get an awful lot of subwoofer for that kind of money. You're in to Velodyne DD12 territory and the Tantra would definitely not be my choice.

For some reason I can't get REW to work to take any measurements - just keep getting feedback through the SPL meter, but I can tell you it sounds bloody awesome. It's in a completely different league to the Quad L-ite sub it replaced. It does go very loud and deep seemingly effortlessly and it feels like it's shaking the very foundations of my house. It sounds strange, but it seems to have completely transformed the whole sound not just the lows.
I've also tried it with music and it seems tight and agile -not at all overblown or woolly.

I'm certainly very satisfied with my purchase. The only complaint I have is the grill. It's beautifully recessed in to the front of the cabinet but as a result incredibly hard to remove - good job it's remote controlled.
