Is it possible to connect an amplifier or a 5.1 sound system to a standard TV so that you can listen to normal terrestrial TV through the extra speakers?

    Thanks

Not unless it has sockets for extension speakers on the TV.

Most televisions have a pair of audio output sockets but these only output a low level signal that needs to be amplified with an external amplifier.

My toshiba tv has 4 speaker outputs and the tv acts as the centre (and pseudo sub).

Not a patch on HC though.

I think Ady means can you connect the Tv's output to an amplifier, in which case the answer is yes, if your tv has an audio output.

If theres no dedicated audio phono output, then you can use the Scart output (as should be on all TVs for recording to VCR etc) - a Scart to Audio lead will do the trick. It may even be better quality, as quite often the audio outputs on TVs aren't fixed level and you set the volume on the TV.

Enjoy those rich, warm NICAM broadcasts - and old Pro Logic still sounds good you know :D

Haha, thanks, so if i used a SCART audio output- would this mean that the audio output will still work for other things like DVD player, VCR or games consoles?

    Yes!

For instance I don't use the TV speakers, only the hifi, it gives TV watching another dimension...
