    Hi

I am looking at replacing my Sony Pascal 335 speakers, and would like help.

I need the replacement speakers to be suitable for a room 13 feet square, preferably modern looking, and I guess not floorstanders due to small room.

My receiver is a Sony STR-DB1080 which whilst great, tends to be a bit bright sounding, so I want the speakers to sound more mellow (more bass I guess).

    My budget is around £400

I have seen the Celestion AVP305s recommended on this forum, and wondered if they would be suitable? They definitely have the right look, but would they be too bright?

    Also seen these - http://www.hifibitz.co.uk/product.asp?id=2354

    and these - http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/Product_ID/910

Any advice on these appreciated, or further recommendations.

    Thanks

Have a look here for the Mordaunt Short Premiere plus system. Make sure its the plus as it has the excellent 309 subwoofer with it:smashin:, much better than the 308. Comes in black or cherry and under your budget. The speakers are superb, stylish and small.

    Hi

Thanks for the link Dfour, I will have a look at those speakers.

And yes I will be needing a sub with any speakers I buy.

    Hi

I wouldn't mind the Kef 2005.2 eggs, but they are out of my price range. :(

As for the Mourdant Short Prem Plus, I really like the look of these but read elsewhere on this forum, they are not recommended with Sony receivers due to their brightness.

As stated previously, I really need mellow sounding speakers to deflect from the 1080s 'bright' sound.

If the Mourdant Shorts are not suitable, how about the Celestion AVP305s?

Or any other suggestions? I really need to improve on my current Sony Pascals!

    Thanks for your help.

If you are looking to avoid brightness then give the KEF "Eggs" a wide berth - they are considerably harsher than the MS Premier Plus.

    Hi

Ok will rule out the Kef eggs then.

Any opinions on the Celestions? Or maybe the Tannoy FX 5.1?

I am still struggling with finding something suitable in this price range (can't wait to save more as I really have had enough of the Pascals!).

Has anyone got a Sony receiver - 1080 or other, with similar speaker package to recommend?

    Thanks

    Furry muff.

Its just that you're lest likely to find 2005.2 at an affordable price second hand.

Either of the 2005 or 2005.2 will be a huge improvement over the Pascals...

    Mepsipax,

Try having a look at the Canton Movie CD1 package, moden looking and sound very good. We do the Kef and Canton, the Kef are slightly bright also if you have any equipment on the slightly bright side then you may get listening fatique.

The Cantons are cheaper and sound better with a wider sound stage with music. They are made of extruded Aluminium and can also go extremely loud for what is a tiny speaker but they do need some running in as they have metal drivers. Below is a link to them, they are not on our site yet but will be very soon.

    Canton Movie CD1's

    Enjoy.

If you need any speaker stands, I have some very solid Stand design which i am looking to shift ( assuming you go for the standmount option!)

    Hi,

I use a Sony amp (555ES) with the Jamo 305 PDD package - I got mine for about £300.

I'm really pleased with them (so is the gf  ).

I opted for these coz I wanted small (they are tiny), good looking speakers. I'm impressed with the sub too. They seem great fot both movies and music, although the sub sometimes needs to be tamed a bit for music.

Jamo do the 325 PDD package also - similar sounding sats as I understand but a bigger sub. Not sure of the price for the 325 tho.

    Good luck.

    Matt

    Hi

Just looking at the Canton Movie CD1 - certainly look worth considering.

I do already have some Alpason stands which hopefully will be ok for whatever I end up buying.

F1Boy, I can't seem to find the Jamo 305s or 325s on the web, only the speaker stands, I will perservere though!

    Thanks for the suggestions

I really want the Cantons, reviews are encouraging and those on the forum that have listened to them seem impressed. Buy from Germany if you want them, much much cheaper!

    Hi

Ok after hours of research and lots of black coffee, I have decided.

I need to choose between the Celestion AVP305s

    Or...

    The Canton Movie CD1s

Both have been well recommended on these and other websites, I just can't decide between them, so if any of you can help make my mind up I would really appreciate it!

    Many thanks

Hey, what did you end up choosing in the end? Both these speakers are appealing at the moment and any feedback would be great.

    Cheers

    Hi

Marmite, I ended up purchasing the Mordaunt Short Premier Plus package from Peter Tyson (£309 for the cherry speakers, and silver sub).

I was just about to buy the Celestions, when a friend told me that he had recently bought the MS speakers and loved them.

Have to say I agree with him! They really sound good, and in my case, a HUGE improvement over my Sony Pascal 335s.

Definitely recommend them plus they look nice too!!

I have noticed these actually and they are extremely reasonably priced. Are they fairly slimline and not too imposing? Its just that i might not neccessarily have the biggest room (for a little while at least). Also, any good with music?

    Cheers in advance

    Hi

The MS 302s are not that big at all. IMO they look really good, especially with the grills off.

I reckon they would blend in with either a modern type room (like mine) or a more traditional room.

As for the sound - can't fault it. Mine are still running in and sound brilliant already. Listened to some music at the weekend, via my pc which connects to my receiver etc. Sounded great, obviously the best sound will be from my DVDs but that's not really the speakers fault, more down to my Sony 1080 which peforms better with movies than music.
    Definitely recommend!!

I noticed your other post saying about the celestion 305s. You can buy them here at a better price http://www.unbeatable.co.uk/CatalogueItem_17951.html

    Hope this doesn't complicate things!

Thanks for the reply. The mordaunts sound nice, although im still put off a bit by having four bookshelf speakers around the room. Hmm.

Oh man, that link is quality :D It has definitely thrown the Celestions into the mix even further! I just really like the styling on those bad boys and reckon they would look pretty good with a nice plasma set up (which is obviously the long term aim!). Really keen to hear peoples thoughts on these more than ever now.

Thanks again mate :smashin: - its hard work all this decision making and help is definitely appreciated.
