Sorry mate but it's only got two optical inputs, you need 3 :(
It has 3 digital inputs. If you look at the info on the actual reciever that's what it says. Whether these are all optical or a combination of coax and optical I'm not sure.

Horses for courses really. magazines will tell you that coax is the better connection, but then another magazine will say optical. Personally there is nothing noticable in it, i use coaxial for my dvd(only because i have a good quality QED lead) and optical for sky/xbox. i tried my dvd with optical using a ixos optical lead and it sounded the same really, but for connection issues i kept it the way it was

What is the difference between coax and optical? And do they sound as good?
Optical is just that (it uses an optical kind of luike fibre optic cable) and coax uses wait for it............coax cable :) . Both of them are as good as each other in the real world (or front room as is more often the case!!) but there's probably some kind pf lab test been done that shows one is a tiny bit better than the other. Problem is both sky and 360 use optical and I'd be very suprised if PS3 used coax instead.

I did check it out (just pointing that out for Michaelknells sake) . It has 2 optical and 1 coax.

So does that mean the Yamaha RX-V357 is no good for me? I can't find many sets with 3 optical digital connections. Shame as I like the Yamaha and if there was a way I could use the coax point it would be useful.

Ok being the super nice guy that I am I've just taken the time to call Richer Sounds for you. Remember the Pioneer amp that I reacomended to you at first (which HAS got 3 optical inputs, one's on the front but the cables are thin and easily tucked away) ?. They've got three left in their shops. 2 in black (looks nice I think, see here http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo-1.cfm/Product_ID/1505) 1 in Chester and one in Preston, and they've got 1 in silver in Kingston. Top amp at a great price, now go buy one.....quick :) .

Cool. I just need an amp to go with it that will work with that and my current speakers. Would be good if I could get them both from richer sounds. Suggestions?

And I need some good cables too.

Might not be too bad, you can always return it if you're not happy with it.

That's OK, as long as it gives me proper 5.1 SS. Thanks a lot to everyone who helped. All I need now is some wires. Does it matter which ones I get? eBay have loads but I don't know the difference. What do people suggest?

1 problem has come up/ On richer sounds it says it has 3 optical digital inputs and 1 coax inout. However:
http://audiovisual.kelkoo.co.uk/b/a/ps_14889428/121601.html

It says it only has 2 optical digital inputs. The product code on the richer sounds one is Yamaha RXSL80S and the other one is Yamaha RXSL80. Is this a typing error or is the richer sounds one an upgrade? I need to know if the richer sounds one has 2 or 3 optical digital inputs

Just phoned them. It only has 2! I'm back to square one again! The cheapest they have with 3 is £300. I can't afford that
Phoned who ?. It states quite clearly on the Richersounds site that it has 3 !!. I also just checked on Yamaha's site and it has. it has two on the rear and one on the front.

I phoned someone at rcher sounds in Watford. He had a look at the product and said it had 2 and one coax. Can you show me the link you got from Yamaha's site?

There's an AUX (auxilliary) input on the front intended for connecting a video camera or game console, which includes an additional optical input. Putting an optical input on the front instead of an extra on the back is a somewhat strange trend amongst manufacturers, which probably has to do with compact living.

But that still means there are a total of 3 optical digital outputs. the pdf manual and other pdf seem to support this too. Out comes the credit card then

Fair enough. Wasn't sure myself but you seem to have cleared it up. :)

I got my amp and sub through today! They look great. Sound rubbish though but I haven't got my optical cables through yet :-(
Anyone know how much I'd get for my Panasonic SA-MT1 DVD player and sub? They are both as new.
