Sound from TV

Hello, I am a rookie to the home theater world. I just remodeled my kitchen and put a 32" Sony TV Model KDL 32L5000. My problem is that the TV is in a cabinet and when you have it on you have to really crank up the volume to hear. I wanted to put some in ceiling speakers in. I have a Comcast HD box that I am putting in the basement, I am running a HDMI cable and a IR repeater from the comcast tuner in the basement to the TV. My question is how can I get sound out of the TV for the in ceiling speakers? Can I simply run a cable from the TV audio out to the speakers and set the TV for external speakers? Would I need self powered speakers if I did it that way? I am trying to avoid putting a separate tuner in for the audio. I do have a optical audio output on the TV, is that something I could use? Thanks in advance for any help with this.
