Recently purchse the HP Pavillion Mini. It has a 3.5mm jack on the back which i would like to connect to a Quad Vena amp through a digital input on the back of the Amp. I'm guessing the output from the PC is analogue its the Realtec HD card. Would i need a USB device to take the signal from analogue to digital in to the Amp ?. Apologies as i guess this has been asked before

You do occasionally see combo sockets that'll take both a 3.5mm jack for analogue and a mini optical connector for S/PDIF. If it only says 3.5mm in the specs then it's analogue.

An analogue to digital converter powered by USB probably does exist but it would be the worst option. Looking up the Quad Vena it has a direct USB input which is your best option if you're not using it for anything else. If you are, then I'd go for a USB external soundcard that provides a S/PDIF output.

Hooked up the USB 2 cable from the PC to the Quad. It shows up in the Sound control panel of the PC so im able to use it for audio so long as I make it the default device.
I also have an HDMI going out to the TV from the PC which I would like to keep for movies etc.
Is their a way without going through control panel to choose one or the other on the fly.
    Thanks
    Ian

You should be able to right click on the sound icon on the task bar to bring up the playback devices screen.

I use Audio Switcher which is great and allows a variety of ways of swapping audio inputs, including hot keys, task bar support. I keep my Headphones permanently attached to my PC and switch between those and the speakers with one mouse click.
