I am building an HTPC. Case arrived today - mCubed HFX :), fairly confident about the video and other bits.

What I am not sure about is the sound card / power amp combination.

Thoughts on the sound card are M-Audio Revolution 5.1, or 1010LT. RME is more than I want to spend at present. I have also been recomended to an external Terratec Aureon 7.1 FireWire, the arguement being that it has a manual volume control and so reduces the risk of damaging my speakers.

For a power amp, I want to stay < £1000 Rotel and Sherwood have amps in this range. Any other to consider?

make sure you go for a card with ASIO support if you're spending that kind of cash on amplification...

Why not use the SPDIF on the mobo and link it directly to the amp ? Take a look at Denon 3805.

I suppose it depends on what Barbarosa wants the HTPC for. If it's for gaming and listening to DVDA, then yes a sound card will be needed for te 24bit resolution. But if it's for listening to normal CDs and DVD Video soundtracks, the SPDIF is fine with sample rates of 48Khz for DVD and 44.1Khz for CD.

    Richie.
