Trying to find out if hiring a car for a weeks visit to Sorrento is worth it(financially and practically)
Heard a lot of bad things about driving around that area. Not sure how bad it is in reality.have driven numerous times around France, done a week in Paris and found it no worse than London.
Has anybody here ever done it?If so would you recommend it or not?
Financially it doesnt look too bad, although not sure what extras are lumped on, but can hire a Fiat Panda for £100.Taking into account transfers from and to airport, and the cost of bus pass for week its not too much plus the convenience of going where we want to go at our our pace.

We stayed near Sorrento in June for a week and would have gone stir crazy without a car. We visited Rome, Amalfi, Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius, all of which would have been a lot more difficult without the car hire.

As far as the driving goes.... it is interesting to say the least! There appears to be little in the way of road rules & the mopeds are like fleas :D If you have managed Paris I would say you'll be fine :)

@Desmo was driving like a resident in about an hour o_O

As Sinead says, we were there for a week and it doesn't take long to adjust to the local way of driving. You've done London and Paris...you'll cope just fine with Sorrento. Just remember to not indicate, beep your horn randomly and swerve on the odd occasion and the only way they'll know you're not a local is because your car isn't covered in scrapes and dents :D

Was parking an issue at all?

Not for us because we stayed at a villa with free parking. Always managed to find somewhere to park on a day out without issues
