I was just about to click the buy button on dvdcraves excellent Sopranos box set offer, when I thought I'd check for comparisons between the regions. But I'm not having much success to be honest.
I've looked at totaldvd.com without much joy, and I've tried dvdcompare.net, which is where my confusion begins. They have the Season 1 R4 listed as being 4:3, whereas on the DVDCrave site, they have it listed as 1.77:1 Widescreen.

Do any of you kind folks know which it really is?
And for that matter, are the other regions any better?
I know that is all a matter of opinion, but my preferences are 1.Picture Quality, 2.No Cuts, and 3.Sound Quality. All the usual extras & bits & bobs don't really bother me.

    Any pointers will be appreciated.

I think Seasons 1 & 2 are both fullscreen in the UK & Oz (probably the same discs!), you may want to check eBay.com for some sellers from Down Under to clarify.

I know Seasons 3 & 4 there is no really difference in the UK or US release (sound options).

    I've got S1 and S2 in R1, and S3 & S4 in R2 - all anamorphic widescreen.

Check your local WH Smith's, as they were selling the sets at £24.99 each in some stores.

    Thanks for the reply.

Yep, I've been doing some digging since then, but I'm not much better off. I still can't be sure as to what the aspect ratio's are, as I've seen too many conflicting specifications to be sure. I think I might just avoid R2/R4 for seasons 1 & 2 just to be on the safe side.

    Having all 4 (R2) sopranos boxsets, the 1st 2 are 4:3, while from season 3 onwards they're 16:9.

I've always bought the R1 sets (1-4) because of the gorgeous packaging, 5.1 and 16:9 for all episodes. R2 didn't get a lookin IMO.

Try CD-Wow - £23.99 each for Series 1-4. I ordered Region 2 which came as Region 4 but were fine.

I think I'm gonna go for the Region 1 for series 1 & 2, just because of the aspect ratio.

    Thanks

Why on earth would they release the 1st 2 sets in 4:3 in the UK, but 16:9 in the USA. I wouldn't mind but at £50 a pop they were hardly cheap. I just assumed that was how they were edited/shot!? bugger.

Why are the USA sets still so expensive? Well, they won't be gettign £50 out of me for season 5. I'll just leave it on my HDD for free.

I have all four seasons on region 1, and am now watching season 5 on channel 4.

And my god, the difference in sound pitch is awful, especially on the music at the beginning.
I expect this is because I`ve watched all four seasons on region 1..... twice

    Spoony.

I think when they repackged the opranos series, (i.e. digipacks), they may well have included the 16:9 transfer instead of the 4:3. Those of us with the original set are stuck with 4:3 for seasons 1+2. :(

Having checked.....I was incorrect. It's only the 1st season that is in 4:3. That's not so bad.

    Here's the deal:

In the UK, The Sopranos series 1 and 2 were originally released in 4:3 with stereo sound. These have now been replaced with the new digipack editions.

All four seasons in these new digipack versions are now widescreen and 5.1 sound.

Picked them all up for just over £20 a pop in WH Smith recently.

I have the original Sopranos series 2 box set. Bought when it first came out, i.e. 6 dvd's in individual cases, inside a box. It's definitely in 16:9. ;) :)

so you must know what the next question is going to be...

    :lesson:

What's the difference between the S2 Digipack versions, and the region 1 versions.
And for that matter, what's a digipack?

    Cheers

OK, you lot got me looking into this, here's what I've found.

Season's 1&2 have been re-released in Digi-Paks (That's just the packaging Orson. I understand it to mean smaller and less bulky....) According to Play.com the new releases are in Widescreen 1.85:1 Anamorphic but sound is only English ; French - Dolby Digital (2.0)... that's the same for both S1 & S2.

Jump across to Play.com USA and the R1 versions are quoted as being in English - Dolby Digital (5.1) and the same picture ratio as the R2 versions.

I would have said Play.com are pretty accurate with their descriptions in general but if anybody has any comments to the contrary please let me know.

CDWOW also lists the region 1 as having DD 5.1 but the price is £50 a pop....where are you lot seeing them for just over £20 then ??

To that end I now have S1 & S2 original R2 sets available for trade/sale...well actually I'm whacking them on eBay cus half the people on there know no difference...

(That wasn't a sales pitch btw if anybody is watching...haha )

I'm willing to be proved wrong here, but I believe Season 1 & 2 R1 releases include audio commentaries on some of the episodes, something that's not on the R2 versions for S1 or S2.

I'd say do what I did... buy Season 1 and Season 2 in R1 via eBay (from someone within the UK!) and pick up R2 (or R1!) for Seasons 3 & 4!

Thanks for all the replies folks, it's obviously the re-releases that have got me confused. I'll just have to keep a look out now, as these are pretty high on my list of wants.
    Cheers all!

I've just picked up the re-release of S1 with 5.1 & W/S on R1 for £29 inc postage from an American seller on eBay Orson. They are quite common on there but do try and make sure you use a reputable seller though.

Season 2 is less common it seems..

Make sure you pay by Paypal or some other sfae method. There was a 17 year old in the paper who conned e-bay buyers out of £45,000 plus pretending to have goods for sale!

:D Ha ha, don't worry mate I've been using eBay for a few years and sell a lot of stuff myself on there. If you're careful and know what you're doing it's a great place to buy stuff.

I saw that story as well. My opinion on that is that his feedback must have been awful so the people that paid him money must have been a bit daft to start with. Even if he changed his id a number of times his f/b must still have been low or zero. Who's going to send a couple grand to a seller with '0' feedback ?

    Some people eh ?
