Hi, I have just purchased a Sony DVD/HDD (above) and all seemed well until I tried a DVD-R disc. It just played back in black and white. I tried it on a ( significantly cheaper) DVD player and it worked just fine. Has anyone else had a similar problem? Recording to the HDD and a DVD+RW is OK.

I've got one of those and I've never had a problem with it. When you say DVD-R, what was the DVD created with, and what's on it? e.g. was it one you dubbed to from the HDD? Have you tried DVD-RW?

I do not know where the disc was produced. I think that it may be a copy though. I tried another non-copyright -R DVD (again from a computer) and that was the same. I wonder if the Sony is too clever in its copy protection or it is faulty.
