Hello, I'm looking to get a 4k tv.

Ive nailed it down to either the Sony XE80/85 or the Samsung Q6F

Mainly I was torn between the XE85 and the Samsung Q6F

My budget is around ~850 Max.

Anyone got any feedback on which is better? I had heard the Q6F is QLED but an entry level QLED tv and may not be better than say the XE85. That being said I can get a XE80 for £499 49inch at John Lewis

The XE80 is IPS so unless you need a wide viewing angle and value picture quality and screen uniformity it's best avoided.

For your budget you should take a look at the MU7000 or the XE85 for a limited HDR experience.

If you want a tv capable of HDR in the future you should then look at the XE90 or Q7, these are 2017 models and are now selling out fast.

The Q6 I would say is between the MU7000 and XE90 for HDR performance but it's just a little cheaper than the XE90 which is better overall.

The Q6 was initially intended for the U.S market but Samsung decided to release it in Europe as well and there are very few reviews out there for it.

The 2018 models only offer minor improvements over the 2017 models and are at a huge premium right now, discounts will start late summer, and Black Friday.

So between the Q6F and XE85 is around £30 from Richer Sounds but the XE90 is £170 more expensive than the Q6F, do you think I should go with the Q6F in that case?

What’s your viewing environment? Do you have 4K/HDR content or likely to get some in near future?

Yes I have PS4 Pro with some HDR titles and the Apple TV 4K with HDR content. My viewing environment is a small flat where i'm sat directly front on to the TV about 2 metres away from it

Avoid anything smaller than 55” in that case. Between the XE85 and Q6, it’s a narrow win for the latter - it’ll have slightly better colours with HDR content.

But as above, XE90/Q7 would be better still but outside your budget.

Ok so I've seen a refurb XE90 for £800 slightly cheaper then a new Q6F, Do you think the XE90 would be better then?

Yes. Without a doubt. It’s available new for £999 but you need to weigh refurb v new etc. But I think you can get aftermarket warranties.

I wouldn’t have any qualms, really. I’m using a refurb laptop that’s lasted 3/4 years.

I presume the refurb comes with a warranty anyway. I think Richer Sounds have some refurbs and offer good customer service

It's more of a gamble of course but provided you buy it from a respected source you are protected by law just the same as a new product. For you its definitely worth it if your primary use is PS4 pro and HDR titles because the other TVs you are considering are not good enough in this respect.

Such is the way of every TV.

You can also search for Samsung Microstutter, Panasonic's problem handling 50hz content and LGs judder when using tru motion.

Point is every TV has an issue, at least the frame repeat problems with the Sony can be solved by setting the TVs picture mode to graphics or picture or using game mode. That is only with an external source though.

So despite those, you would recommend the XE90 over the Q6F?

I often recommend it over the higher end Samsung Q7. It's the much better TV for picture quality.

If you are concerned about smart and happen not to be happy with it, just get your own smart TV stick or box.

If you have the apple TV you may wish to consider trying to get hold of the XE93 or paying a bit more for one of the LG OLEDs to get Dolby Vision.

Ive just returned a C7 OLED TV due to having 2 with banding issues. The XE90 is half price (refurb from Richer Sounds) of the C7V at the moment

That's unlucky, I hope you have better luck with the other TVs.

Re issues- it’s a lottery but can understand re not wanting to get fingers burned. I know in the Q7/8/9 thread some are reporting minor issues whereas my set is either fine or I can’t notice the problem. Also with mine, it has slightly higher picture quality v the flat version as it has enhancements to do with the curved screen.

I guess I've just not heard any good things or rather much at all about the Q6F so that is what put me off that initially. Im pretty set on the XE90 now as its slightly cheaper than the Q6F. Still not 100% though.

Just to add my weight in...

I recently bought a second hand Panasonic dx802 on all the good reviews and everything else. It didn't do anything for me. So I looked for a new TV. I found the xe9005 at an amazingly decent price but didn't act quickly enough.

I was reluctant to spend around a grand on a TV, but went to John Lewis and richer sounds etc, I had a grand limit and looked at all TVs possible around that area (I would have spent more if the TV would have justified it).

I got the xe9005 and I have to I say, coming from plasma (it was a hard break up) I've fallen in love with this TV. It handles everything beautifully, image is gorgeous and I've still got 30 days to see if there are inherent problems. I've not noticed the stuttering on 50hz content, but I've heard if you put it in he mode it rectifies it somewhat; like said previously, all TVs will have niggles.

I can wholeheartedly recommend the 9005. If you stump up the new price it'll come with a 5 year warranty to boot.

    Honestly, super impressed with it.

Im not too fussed about buying it new. Im happy to have the 12 month Richer Sounds warranty for the refurb. If it comes and its not up to scratch then maybe I will return for a new model.

I took the hit and bought the XE90 for £800, which is half the price of the C7V at £1600. Hope that was a good deal
