I can confirm the tab-bonding is self-repairable.
Thanks to the following thread on avsforums: KDL-XBR4 Half the Screen Dark with Slow Pixel Refresh All inputs - AVS Forum I was able to fix my KDL-46x3500 set over the weekend.
It's just over three years old and had been exhibiting the horizontal lines / ghosting on the right side of the screen problem for the last few months.
This DIY fix is not for the feint-hearted! The set has to be plugged in and turned on to test the tabs so some serious risk of eloctrocution, you have been warned.
Requires taking the TV almost completely apart in order to expose the tabs. Faulty tab for me was the top right one as you look at the screen. Couple of carefully placed cut-to-fit silicon pads directly over the offending tab on the inside of the metal frame to apply firm constant pressure are now doing the trick.
Completely invisible once the screen is put back together, and now working as good as new.
Shame on Sony for putting together a flagship model with such an obvious design flaw.
