Sony X3000/X3500 Series Thread *Part 2*

I can confirm the tab-bonding is self-repairable.

Thanks to the following thread on avsforums: KDL-XBR4 Half the Screen Dark with Slow Pixel Refresh – All inputs - AVS Forum I was able to fix my KDL-46x3500 set over the weekend.

It's just over three years old and had been exhibiting the horizontal lines / ghosting on the right side of the screen problem for the last few months.

This DIY fix is not for the feint-hearted! The set has to be plugged in and turned on to test the tabs so some serious risk of eloctrocution, you have been warned.

Requires taking the TV almost completely apart in order to expose the tabs. Faulty tab for me was the top right one as you look at the screen. Couple of carefully placed cut-to-fit silicon pads directly over the offending tab on the inside of the metal frame to apply firm constant pressure are now doing the trick.

Completely invisible once the screen is put back together, and now working as good as new.

Shame on Sony for putting together a flagship model with such an obvious design flaw.

I had the recall check done on my KDL40X3000 this Wednesday. Didn't need anything but the repair man said that the panels are still available for this model. Repair agents in my area are DBS in York.

Did they take the TV away to check? If not, did you see what was checked & how? I'm just curious...

No they brought in a stand, sat the TV face down on it and took off the back. As you look at the back of the TV the components they checked were the two transformers at the top left. They measured the resistance and said they were OK. Don't know what the resistance should be tho'.

John.

Sounds straight forward then, thanks for the info.

Hi,

Looks like my 40x3500 just completely died after 3.5 years of happy usage:(
Yesterday it worked just as usual, but today morning it refuses to turn on altogether.
What's my play here?

What's my play here?

power supply? looks like that is the problem, are you getting the standby light?

No stanby-light, absolutely nothing happens when I press on/off-button.
First thing I checked out was obv the power cord and it seems fine.
My second thought was ****, power supply fried.
Any idea of
1.) Where power supply is located in 40x3500?
2.) How to determine if it really is power supply that failed?

^Okay, weirdly enough, yesterday the TV all of sudden started to respond to pressing on/off-button. So, it went dead for two days and w/o any apparent reason/change just woke up from dead - I'm puzzled.

I have this TV and was an original adopter. I have used Sony TV's all of my life and wouldn't buy anything else. If they have a generic fault, it's their On/Off buttons. I have had to replace the buttons on 2 TV's in the past, so far not with this set.

Not sure if this helps - good luck

All right, good to know. FWIW my x3500 has worked fine since it became alive again. Fingers crossed...

****, now the on/off-button stopped responding again.
rozel (or anyone):
Any idea how to go about fixing/replacing on/-off-button of X3500?
Where can I get a new one? How easy is it to replace?

Tried to google it up but no luck so far.

Assuming it is the on/off button, I suggest your local Sony Centre - try yellow pages/Telephone directory and give them a ring for a quote.

Good luck

roz

All righty. Thanks.
However, it became alive again, maybe at least for a while, I just let it be on standby instead of turning it completely off.

Looks like now I'm stuck w standby.
On/off button doesn't respond anymore at all when in standby-mode so I can't turn tv completely off. Even if I remove the power cord the standby-light will still stay lit, at least for quite some time.

Hi all.

Just want some advice please as to what to do for the best.........

The unbelievable happened last night in that my right shoulder slightly banged into the bottom left hand corner of the screen on my KDL-46X3500. I heard a slight crack, turned round and sure enough I have broken the inner panel, I think judging from the circular splodge at the point of impact and the vertical coloured lines eminating from it to the top of the screen. I quickly turned the set off and after about an hour turned it back on and now no picture whatsoever! The splodge is still visible with the vertical lines with two horizontal baige lines going right across the screen with red coloured clouding :(

After beating myself up all last night and this morning, I spoke to a Sony Centre in York who confirmed that it was definately repairable and who gave me the name and address of the company who would be doing the repair, which is an authorised Sony Repair Specialist. I then spoke with my Insurance Company who are going to get either "Comet" or "Ival" to come and look at it to give an estimate of the repair cost. Obviously I am hoping they will say it isn't repairable and then hey-lads-hey, I will be up for a new TV :) :) :) In any event I am not having them do the work if it is repairable but the Insurance Company will then only pay up to their quote, which could be much cheaper than a Sony Repair Specialist.

Have tried searching the net on broken LCD Screens and almost everything I have seen seems to suggest that a broken inner LCD screen isn't repairable and so if a new replacement screen isn't available then a new TV.

Would I be correct in thinking that the part-number for a replacement screen for my TV is: -

LTY460HH-LH2 ?

If there are different versions how can I easily find out which mine is please?

I am totally gutted right now and still beating myself up. What was I doing? Well I was installing my upgraded Linn Sondek LP12 having been to York to collect it earlier in the day. It has had an almost new (2 hours use only) Linn Ittok LV11 arm and Linn Adikt cartridge fitted with a complete overhaul. I was trying to plug in the phono leads at the time and fiddling with the earth lead. I should have known better as I have done this a million times but for some reason I just lost my balance whilst crouching down on my knees. The distance from my shoulder to the TV screen couldn't have been more than 2" so I am quite shocked at how little force it took to crack (break) the inner screen - oh well, you live and learn don't you? The TV was wall mounted.

So I would welcome any input here from anyone with similar experiences please

Thank you for reading and hopefully some of you can advise me to make sure I do what is necessary to either replace or restore my prized TV back to new (normal).

Edit - Mods - as this thread is becoming old now, after getting the heads up at the time of posting, if you think I will get more replies from another section of the AVForums, then please transfer this post on my behalf. It is a while since I last posted - cheers

Just like to say my bravia 46x3500 hit the 5 year mark last week and was still going strong.
Put it on xmas eve noticed a row of pixels what could only be described as looking like a bar code.

Decided to give Sony a email at 2am to my surprise i got a response on xmas day , not automated either.
answered a few question, lets see what happens.

had no problems with any of the tab issues like the majoruty of users.

Ruh-roh! Hope it gets sorted ok.

Mine appears to be running ok still, must be 5 years old now so fingers crossed I've not jinxed it.

I never followed up with Sony on the 'smoking' models issue either...

Hi all,
Who can share the latest firmware for Sony KDL-40X3500 serial 4301679, panel T2. If I understand I need to file 585 version - C-5215LE_X_40_T2_BCN.ZIP
I have a problem with the DVB-C tuner - missing some channels

I ask you to lay out firmware on public resource, or to send to wlads @ mail.ru

Thanks.

Long shot on this old thread but can anyone help me with my KDL46X3500? When I turn the set on it displays the hdmi info (top left) all the time until I press the info button a couple of time to kill it. I know it can be switched off because it goes when I use the 'reset all' option but I don't really like doing this as I have to go through and put all my settings back in. The kids keep changing it accidentally so would like to know a quick fix for this..

Why don't you just do what you're already doing; press the info button a couple of times to get rid of it? It just cycles through displaying the hdmi info in the top left corner, the time (or something) in the bottom right corner and then neither of them. It keeps the last setting between power off/on.

I'm having the same problem , but I don't have the remote anymore ( little one broke it :-( )

Any idea how I can get rid if the info from showing up please

Another question :) , can anyone tell me how I can stop my x3500 from doing any up scaling ? My xbox one and Apple TV both show stuttering .

Ta

Still have this tv since 2008 & i m loving it, got the 46x3500, any other members here still ahem this tv set? i have been using it with my xbox1 & apple tv, all good touch wood, only would be awesome if we could update the firmware through usb on this set.

I still have my 40x3000 as my main TV and still love it. I had it ISF calibrated too.

I have been looking at 55" 4k Sony's but if I am honest, I can't really justify the change, other than for the sake of a bigger TV.
