Sony VPL-VW300ES Owners thread

Yes I feel the same way unfortunately. It was advertised with a yellow tint at left side of the image which I suspect is a panel issue.
Let's hope we are wrong.

Strangely the guy you bought it from was previously selling a vw500 with a yellow tint on the bottom, seems he has some bad luck with projectors

At work all day so will have a look tonight. Had a quick look at a UHD and normal blu-ray and didn't look too bad.

He specialises in those.

Let us know how you go.

I have text the original owner and apparently you can panel shift and also zone shift which will allow another 30 pixels shift. I did have a go with that last night but there are quite a lot of zones so will have a good play tonight/tomorrow.

That is correct, just checked on mine. That might fix it for you

I'll have a try tonight, won't be home until 8.30 [emoji17]

Give us a yell to see how things go but by checking mine you should be able get things in a better shape.

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but it is said by professionals that zone should be avoided as it can impact picture quality, I'm.not sure if that's correct though.

I hope you can get it sorted.

Thanks for that. I did have a quick look at the Revenant UHD and a regular 1080p and did notice the 1080p looked like it was being upscaled very well.

Ok not heard that but will have a play.

Its OK as long you shift whole pixels rather that part pixel - I think on Sony's a whole pixel is a movement of 10 so in the picture above the vertical movement of 30 means it has been shifted 3 pixels up.

So will be best to set all back to default and then get in close with panel and then try zone in increments of 10 or is it best to do the zones first?

I would think its best to do it as you've done it with the complete panel shift alignment and then go in with zone shift - I'm guessing that will only let you go to a maximum of 30 as well but should hopefully be enough.

..or perhaps call Sony support first to confirm that all is being done the way it should be.

I have been in contact with Sony support, just had an email back and it's not looking good.

I see Angry Bird has been looking at this thread. Have you spoken to him yet?
It looks like the green panel is way out.

Yes. I am in contact with him.

Changing topic for a bit, who has a 4K player and what settings are you using?

I have a panny UHD player, and am using the user recommended settings from this site (in a dedicated bat cave).

So far my comparisons of 1080p to UHD have only offered a minor improvement, to the point where I compared Deadpool blu and UHD back to back (one playing on the panny UHD, one on my panny 320). Even then the comparison wasn't night and day, or even necessarily noticeable. I used the gun battle sequence on the freeway, focusing on deadpools suit and facial close ups, and I genuinely struggled to tell the difference.

Reviews state 'an obvious uptick in detail' so I am wondering why I can't see it. I have had better results with Netflix and YouTube 4K content, but I was expecting UHD blu Rays to top them by some margin.

I have 110" screen at 3m view distance, using HDMI port 2 as the hdcp compliant one, settings as per this site, so am wondering if I should be doing something different ...? I am defo getting 4K content through as the motionflow settings get restricted to off or impulse as per the instructions.

Any thoughts welcomed. I.e. Is there a secret '4K button' I have forgotten to press ;)

I didn't think motion flow worked on 4K?
Have you pressed the status button on the Sony remote to check output.
I had a quick look last night and it does a great job of upscaling so what you are maybe seeing is a great upscaled 1080p image that looks very close to a native 4K image.
Panasonic player settings on Auto.

You can get impulse on 4K but that's the only option (I don't use it though).

Yup, I think the issue is exactly that. 1080p upscaled looks so good already (secret soldiers of Benghazi as a recent example was stunning), that proper 4K is only a 'bit better'. Just a bit underwhelmed as I am not seeing the 'value' in 4K at the moment having got the projector, player, and super expensive fibre optic cable. I have shown 4K to some regular attendees at my place and they can't tell the difference either. Ho hum!

Panny UHD is set to auto.

But not wanting to sound like a sourpuss, by comparison my arcam 550, Dirac (after some teething issues), and Atmos 7.1.4 setup are amazing. Properly amazing, and a big step up from regular HD audio. Just wish 4K was the same is all...!

I also have Atmos and it's great when done well. You are getting 4K but would you prefer old blu-Ray's to look 1080p?

Not sure I understand what you mean?

On a related note, is there any way to benefit from the WCG on the Sony? I.e. The x.v. Colour space settings, or not using rec 709 for example?
