Hi

I'm looking for a projector for my home cinema. I have a opportunity to buy a Sony VPL-VW100 for £1600. It's almost new and has been running for 200 hours. As I can see it was a pretty expensive projector when it came out, but is it any good compared to what I can but today atbout £2300 (my budget) ?

The Ruby uses a Xenon lamp that was/is pretty expensive (>£1k at some suppliers) and they don't last that long.

Also have you seen the unit in the flesh ? If not it's a pretty large unit i.e. medium suitcase size.

The Zeiss lens is good but it uses early generation SXRD panels so convergence/uniformity may be an issue. The video processing in the Sony PJ's I've used also struggle with interlaced material.

You may be able to find a recently discontinued JVC model fits your budget, has lower consumable costs and better performance is some areas.

I wouldn't bite his hand off.

The VW100 was outstanding value in its day, but recent projectors have better performance at lower prices. The market has moved fast.

I agree... You can find some more good projectors at lower prices....

Just slightly over budget (isn't it always the case) is a JVC HD350 at Richer Sounds if you're anywhere near their Brighton branch. Probably a better bet than the Sony given the running costs. Otherwise maybe look at the Panasonic AE4000 for around £2,000.

JVC DLA-HD350 Black | DILA Projector 1080p HD Ready | Richer Sounds

It's a bit more than some places were doing the last models for, but it seems to be the only place left with any. The newer HD550 is £500 more and doesn't really add anything in performance terms by all accounts.
