I'm in a similar situation - my building work is nearly done and I had planned for an HS20 (I need the long throw), but the AE700 should also now be suitable.

It looks like the HS51 throw will make it a non-goer for me though - It may well be shown at CEDIA over the next week or so, so we should get some reports soon. Worth a wait for a few days/weeks IMHO to see what arrives and people's first thoughts.

The AE700 will be cheaper though (1.5k ish) than the HS51 (2k+ I'd imagine)

I'm not sure either (i.e. what to eventually get). Main thing with ae700 is smoothscreen means less likely screen door. I saw the screen door on and off on the tx-100. I think it may be what people on avs have referred to as "peek-a-boos" -
. Which is what seemed to be happening, but also constant screen door was there. HS20 seemed smooth and I didn't notice any screen door. I don't know if higher resolution of the HS20 reduced screen door or if it's sony's micro lens architecture. Hope it is the latter.

Cedia 2004 Expo in US today as well:

    Hmmmm, the plot thickens....

From the press release you posted,

... would lead one to believe that Sony have developed their own new 1280x720 panels ?? I had understood that the PJ would be 720p, but there had been various contentions that it would be Sony's usual 13XX x 768 panlels.

The discussion on avsforum comparing the AE700 and HSH51 at Cedia is also interesting, given that someone (can't recall name of poster) reckoned that there wasn't much between them... considering the price being quoted for the AE700 that'll make for interesting choices. Have to bear in mind that the comparisons from Cedia weren't "head to head" and with different environments, sources etc., it's early days to be drawing any conclusions....

I'm looking forward to Cine4Home getting their hands on these two and seeing what they're really capable of (including some real-world measurement of the CR).

I saw the HS51 twice yesterday. Both demo's inconclusive except to say that it's definately a step forward contrast wise over HS20.....Will try to get longer in less crowded room if I can.

    Elliot,

    Lucky you !

Would you try to get a look at the AE700 for us ? I figured yourself (and/or Gordon) might be there, but wasn't sure youe were still keeping an eye on the forum here. Would be very interested in any comparison you might make between the Sony and the AE700.

    Thanks,

    Sean.

A comparison to the Optima H77 would be VERY useful (for me anyway!!!)

    If you have time :smashin:

I'm back and about to go to bed.

I'll say that those who complain of screen door in the demo at CEDIA are nutters. Of course you can see the pixels when you sit that close. For me if you sit 1.8 or more screen widths away it's hopefully a non-issue. The contrast and punch was greater than I was expecting from an LCD. Looked like an original 720P chipped DLP to me except without rainbow. I'd like to see one in a better demo situation though. The raised black level could have been due to the light seeping in to the room rather than issues with the PJ itself.

I had started posting from show in general chat. However no-one seems to have notced or has any interest.

The problem I htink I have these days s that I am a distributor so going on publc forums slagging stuff off isn't really a "done thing". If I do post a report it'll probably be just pics and comments on nice things. So if your desired product isn't mentioned it's likely it's because I had nothing nice to say about it. You could email me of course for confirmation as to whether I saw it but don't expect a diatribe about the product itself.

I was awake for 36hrs since leaving Indy on Monday and have just got up from 12hrs sleep.....so my brain still isn't quite functioning and I've lots of work to catch up on.

the spec is either wrong, or different for UK models though as the avland specs include

1280x788 panel (most probably just a typo)
[edit] the pixel count matchs 3x1280x720
SCART (HS10/20 didn't have - the CEDIA model waas US so it would have been missing anyway)
DVI input - the HS51 at CEDIA reportedly doesn't have one, only an HDMI
