I believe the upgrade only fixes DTS ES 6.1 decoding in AFD mode.
I've read somewhere that DDEX still has to be manually switched.

    hope this helps

Star Wars ATOC hasn't got the flag to make the AV reciever automatically switch to 6.1 mode, so you have to do it manually. There is no way the AV reciever can tell that is is DDEX. There are only a few titles that do have the flag, including Jurassic Park III and Disney's Atlantis, they stopped using it because it caused "drop outs" with some AV recievers. All DTS ES titles are flagged so the AV reciever can switch to the right mode without user intervention.

Just thought I'd add that Gladiator DTS:ES is unflagged - would be important to someone who calls themselves Maximus.

is it imperative to have the firmware upgrade? I leave my amp in 6.1 for dvd and have not had any problems.

EvilMudge, what version of Gladiator have you got? according to Rewind DVD region comparisons only the region 1 version has DTS ES Discrete, but region 2 should have DTS ES Matrixed, but my R2 copy shows no signs that it should be in DTS ES - it's not marked on the case, disc or on screen menus as DTS ES, and it isn't flagged as DTS ES.

R2 Gladiator is DTS:ES but unflagged, it's about the only exception that I can remember to the rule that EX is unflagged and ES is flagged.
R1 is discrete ES IIRC - any decoder that recognises extension data should switch to 6/7 speaker mode.
