I have an old (around 1996) Sony CRT TV which has developed a picture fault - whites and light colours are shown as varying shades of reddish purple. No amount of playing around with the picture settings changes it.

Is this a common fault? Repairable, or am I off to the tip?

    Thanks in advance.

I couldn't tell you if it's repairable or not but it sounds serious. Maybe the electron gun has started pack-up(?)

It is a very good time to buy a replacement CRT TV though. The retailers are almost giving them away!

Thanks, I imagined it would be something similar. I wasn't really holding out any hope, just seems a shame to dump it...

I had a similar problem on an older Sony set. I took it to the local TV shop. They said it was a "purity" fault and charged me £50 to fix it.

You can search google on sony purity fault and theres a few examples from TV engineers websites.
