You should probably only need to take the batteries out of the remote for a while to reset it to its factory settings, there should be no need to try to reprogram anything on the recorder.

If you don't have a manual you can download one from here-
SVR-S500 (SVRS500) : DVD and Blu-ray Disc™ : Sony
cheers
Glyn.

i tried leaving the batteries out and the unit off overnite,(i work in the motor trade which is the type of thing you would do to re-set an immobiliser or c/locking) but nothings worked yet. i have a manual, which does say if you set the remote to hdd 2 or 3 you wont be able to use the unit, but i can't believe a manufacturer would make something that cannot be re-set back to factory settings??

The manual says you just hold down the Enter key and press 1, 2, or 3 on the remote to match the PVR's command mode - it can only be 2 or 3. Once you can access the PVR menus you can change both back to HDD 1 if you want.

i think thats at the point of changing it, if you have a conflict with remotes, ie if you have more than one unit. The remote doesn't seem to work at all, b4 when any button was pushed the led flashed on the unit to acknowledge something, but now there appears to be no life whatsoever.i'll give it another try, cos i really do like this and its been bang on reliable untill a donut go hold of the remote.

cheers i'll take any help or suggestions anyones got gratefully.

If the remote is set to HDD1 and the box is set to HDD2 or 3, then it shouldn't work at all, that's sort of the whole point of it.

so are we sayimg at that point its a bin job??? and thats there is no way of ever getting these two to talk to each other again.no way of setting the hard drive back to hdd1 to match the remote, how bizzaar.

still looking for an anwser, i still find it unbelievable that the manufacturer, bulids somthing that the kids can get hold of flick to settings, tell the hard drive its hdd2/3 and we have a complete marriage breakdown, and no amount of councilling will work.

the prob is you cant go through process as post4 untill you can access the unit! Then you enter the menu select hdd1/2/3, then press enter on the remote, along with button 1/2or3 to match them up. on mine the menu has been selected hdd2 selected nothing pressed on the remote, so it still thinks its talking to the drive set as hdd1 (no response) pressing the enter key on the remote along with 12or3 keys does nothing.

I think you are misunderstanding, still.

You can change
- the remote control setting on the unit - as you say you need to be able to work the unit to do this
AND
- the remote control setting on the remote control, which does not require access to the unit at all.

The two have to match. Yours evidently don't match.

Change the remote setting on the remote until it matches what's set on the unit. By trial and error if necessary. See post #4.

(above based on what I've read above; not on my own knowledge).

If it helps, do the Enter + number thing with your hand covering the IR emitter on the remote. Try (say) Enter + 1 first. Then uncover it and see if the machine reacts to a normal command. If not, cover it again and do Enter + 2 and then see if it works .... etc....

well done that man!!!!! i hadn't realised i might have do go right through the key pad numbers. i was stopping at three thinking that hdd1/2/3, thats all i had to match the remote too. the release key number was 0 i guess because the unit setting had been changed to hdd2 but no corresponding nmbers on the remote were touched the remote defaulted to 0. Also i was trying to access the unit to get to the menu to alter it back to hdd1 and then set the remote. Any way my wife is delighted, but i'll now have too suffer 8 weeks of recorded casualty. but at least i do have my films to watch. thanks to everyone who contributed into helping an ageing dinosaur.
