Hi everyone..hope you guys can help me.. Ive just bought a Sharp LC46X8E, PS3, Virgin V-box and Tannoy FX5.1 speakers. Next is the amp….I don’t really know much about amps so have done some reading up in various magazines and online and for my buget of around about £300 the Sony STRDG820 seems like a great buy…but as im sure you all know its impossible to get hold of in black. So what is the next best amp after the STRDG820??? Ive thought about the Denon AVR1909……is that better than the STRDG820??
Any advise would be greatly appriciated.

Most people’s opinions would be that the Denon 1909 is superior to the Sony820 by quite a distance, but again this also isn’t available in black at a reasonable price anywhere.
Or you could try to Yamaha dsp-ax 763 which is according to WhatHiFi, the best amp under £500……wait, don’t go there!! Most stores are selling this at the full list price of £399 even though Richer Sounds were selling these at £280 a couple of months ago when they had stock. Anywhere that had these at a discounted price is now out of stock.

The Onkyo 606 can be had for £299 in black. But my personal preference is to avoid Onkyo amps.

I think play.com had the sony820 in black for £249 last week, have you tried them?

...would be better if you explained why you avoid them - it could assist in the original posters decision....

Thanks for your advise…I have checked play.com but they only have the silver and I think even that is out of stock now.

Ive seen the denon 1909 for £350 in black…which is an ok price isnt it? But don’t know how well it would work with my speakers (Tannoy FX5.1), because I know that these speakers are not particularly high end.

wont even mention the yamaha dsp-ax 763 haha and I just don’t fancy the Onkyo 606 because of what people have said about it on here.

Hi Stevelup, fair point, but seeing as this was only a personal preference/opinion and probably very different from most people's opinion on Onkyo, I thought I better not give reasons that might put someone off buying an Onkyo, after all there are plenty of happy Onkyo owners.
I have never owned an Onkyo amp either so I would only be going on other people's opinions that I have read on here rather than personal experience.
I only really posted to try to help with the stock question as I have been trawling the net for the last few weeks myself trying to find the right amp for me at the right price.

p.s. the £350 price for the Denon 1909 looks petty good considering stocks of this amp in black ar also near zero. Also Denon are supposedly having a big price increase very soon, so I doubt they'll be available for the RS price of £299 for a long time.

I was also considerig this model until I realised it doesnt have a powered zone 2, so you'd have to add another amp for listening in a different room.

Ive now just found a site selling the STRDG820 in black for £242. I think im gona go for it. I dont think theres any point me paying £300 or over for somthing like the denon 1909 when I dont really have the speakers to match (TannoyFX5.1)

Keith, where did you find the Sony 820 in black for £242?

I have found the Silver in stock for £224 from Cheap Electricals.

I have asked them about when they'll have stock in Black and the response I got back was:

This model has now been discontinued by Sony.

    Is this true?

If its not gona be untill march (which is what richer sounds are saying) then I will cancel the order..cant wait that long!

Superfi reckon 7-10 days, however only their site says that, not heard it from the horse's mouth.

I emailed Superfi, and got less of a conclusive answer:

Im afraid the Receiver's are on back order with the supplier, they are unable to confirm a due date at this time, they basically operate a traffic light system when ordering from them, the item will show as either,

Green = In stock, Available to order for delivery within a few days.

Amber = No Stock but due in ??.??.???? so they can be ordered for delivery just after that date.

Red = No Stock and No delivery dates available at that time.

These systems have been red now for some time, all being well a date will be available soon although no estimate is available.

    Parp :(

Im still waiting to hear from stoneaudio.co.uk about my order that I placed at 1pm today. and it STILL doesnt say on their website that the STRDG820 in BLACK is infact out of stock! Hopefully they will email me tomo morning and let me know whats going on! Will keep you guys updated as soon as I have anymore info

I'd buy a different model if they weren't so damned deep. My wall unit can't accomodate the average 39cm deep amps. :( Have Sony laid off too many staff or something?

Whats wrong with the silver one. Is it just a colour thing or is there some other difference. Given whats happening with the price of the Yamaha amp I had my eye on I think I will be buying this Sony one pretty soon.

They are both exactly the same... people generally want a black one to 'fit in' with their other AV equipment.

I'm probably going for a Silver one (£224 inc delivery from cheapelectricals.co.uk)

Had this email thismorning from stoneaudio.co.uk...

'We have just had confirmation from Sony Uk that the black are no longer available to order so we will not be getting any more stock. Apologies. Only the silver is available now.'

I had also contacted webelectricals.co.uk and they had sent this thismorning..

'We have this item (in black) come in stock today but all stock are allowcated to our back orders. We expect another delivery next week. You need placed order before the stock in otherwise it will be difficult to get one. Even we have some free stock left, it normally goes out pretty quickly.'

So I have decied to go for a silver one from stoneaudio for £242. I think even if I put in an order with webelecticals for a black one I doubt id get it cos expect they have a big back log of people who have ordered up the STRDG820 in black. And its not gona be long before the silver becomes hard to get hold of.

Is this amp being replaced with something similar in the price range? I'm suprised they are discontinuing it if it is selling so well.

Hmm different companies saying different things. Not sure I believe the no more black statement. The amp is still tagged as "New" on the Sony website too.

Richersounds currently have this on their site:

"We were expecting stock of this 5 star AV reciever in Feb, but latest info from Sony is that their delivery of new stock has slipped to early March, sorry...out of our hands this one, though we are pestering Steve at Sony daily for stock!"

No harm in joining two queues I guess. Perhaps I'll be the owner of 2 black amps next week. :D

    For black or silver?

Webelectricals called me today offering the silver now, but I declined and she said 7-10 days for the black. I'm happy with that if they follow through, as my sub hasn't even finished being made yet.
