Hi guys, I got a SRT DH820 for Christmas. I have it hooked up to a PS3 via HDMI (1.4) and a Sky HD box via HDMI (1.4) and optical cable.

When playing Blu-Rays on the PS3, although the sound (for example) on the disc is DTS HD 5.1, the corresponding icons do not light up on the receiver panel. All I get is LPCM displayed. I have the PS3 set to output all sound modes through HDMI and Linear PCM.

Do I have this set up right or am I missing something? Is it better to have Dolby True HD (for example) or LPCM?

This isn't an issue for the Sky box as it only supports DD 5.1 which passes through the optical.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Which ps3 do you have?

Have not messed with my slim ps3 for a while but you have to set it to bitstream and let the receiver decode the audio. I used to have a fat ps3 and if I remember that would not output the high definition audio and you had to do it onboard to LPCM. Dont know whether any subsequent firmware changed the situation or whether you are stuck if you have a fat.

I have a 60GB fat PS3 running on the latest firmware. It states on the side that it decodes all the major audio standards as well as HD audio. If I choose bitstream, this will only decode HD audio as 2 channel, whereas LPCM is pure uncompressed sound. Is that right? I'm just confused as to which is the best codec to go for.

The fat never used to have support for bitstreaming Dolby True HD or DTS Master Audio. You have to do it onboard use LPCM unless something has changed. I think it is to do with an older hdmi chipset on the fat.

In practice the only material difference is what it will say on your receiver panel. You are not losing much.

So to get Dolby True HD, DTS HD MA etc, I would need either a newer PS3 or stand-alone Blu Ray player? Will my fat not send HD audio via HDMI?

Yes the slim does bitstream dd true and dts master. Any 100+ quid bd player should too. But really you are not losing much audio quality just dts master etc not lighting up on your receiver.

I don't understand it though. My PS3 has the Dolby True logo on it so I can only presume it can decode it. And HDMI is the only way to send it to the amp, as optical cannot handle the data. I'm going to try it with my Toshiba Blu Ray deck in the morning, see if that's any different. Thanks for your help.

yes it can decode dd true onboard and then send it as lpcm to your receiver. it cant bitstream it. the slim can.

as ive said you are not really losing much only that the audio is decoded earlier by your fat. there is much info about this on the net.
