Hey guys, just took delivery of a new shiny STR-DB790 (purdy) and although my new Tannoy R2's have not arrived, I was impatient and integrated the amp into my current setup...

Everything is set up correctly, and when using the fm/am radio the volume only needs to be around -50db to be deemed 'loud'.

However, when I switch to tv/sat or dvd (both which are connected using generic phono leads) I have to turn the volume on the receiver to around -30db to get around the same level of output as the tuner...

Is this a 'feature' of all receivers? Is this due to the dvd and tv being 'external'?

I'm guessing it's because the reception on the onboard tuner is of a very high sensitivity?

Perhaps somebody else can provide a better theory!

Well just connected my Xbox using digital to video 3, and the volume is as loud, if not louder than the tuner...

I guess its the very poor (less than £1) phono leads...

Off to the shops I go :)

the output from my sky digibox is quite a low level even on maximum setting in the menu. DVD's are always quiet too, but thats just the nature of the soundtrack. Personally I wouldn't worry about it.

Found what the problem was, in the DVD setup menu was an option to switch 'Audio DRC' to 'wide range', hey presto hugely improved volume levels...

    :)

Don't agree with that! I find that a Cd player on an analogue input gives the quietest input (smallest signal), while my DAC (using the 5.1 bypass) gives the strongest signal.

And that any digital input is also quite "loud" as you say.

I find that most dvd's are more quiet than anything else. Most of the time the amp (sony) is around -50, ihave had dvd's upto around -35 , but this seems to be up and down and not the same for all dvd's.T3 is the loudest dvd i've heard.

Received my Tannoys this morning!!! Was told I was getting them Monday...

Although not run in, the difference is staggering. The clarity of the sound, the smooth treble, and this is with carp speaker cable! Getting some QED Silver Bi-Wire on Saturday, cannot wait!

I have a Sony 1070 and Tannoy R2's. First at -35db's it is VERY loud, i could not listen to BHD at this volume. Secondly check your speakers are a matching pair, i.e 00013 + 00014 are matching 00014 + 00015 are not a matching pair.
