    Hi folks,
I'm looking at buying a receiver and I'm interested in the Sony 1080 as it's at clearance prices at the moment and I need equipment that has pre-outs so I can drive my front stereo pair through my Naim stereo amp.

I read some posts about hissing amps - is this pretty much resolved now?
I was looking at the Marantz 4300 but this has limitations when it came to setting speaker size combinations.

Can the Sony handle different timings for each speaker specifically rears as my rears aren't equal distances apart?

    Thanks

    Dave

    Hi Dave,

I have a Sony 930 which I believe is a similar amp and it hisses. I don't notice it when listening to music or watching films. It's only really when not playing anything and I have the volume right up or have my ear near the speaker.

Who knows maybe Sony aren't using the very best components on their low budget amp:) ;). I've used my 930 for a number of years and have been happy with it.

My 930 pairs the sets of speakers so you can't set delays between the two rears. I wouldn't expect the 1080 to have that either but I'm not sure... Have you checked the Sony site?

    Jus.

Just looked at a picture of the amp on av-sales. Looks a lot like mine as well. Couple of extra buttons but the case, display and volume etc looks exactly the same. Sure you don't want to buy my 930 :D :D

It's a very different amp and a step up from the 940/1070. In terms of flexibility it's very good apart from lack of component ins. I'm pretty sure you can set each speaker, at least with a test tone.

For the money, I reckon it's a bargain.

I know you can set the levels of the rear channels independently. I'll check on the delays this evening and let you know.

Bad news, I'm afraid. There are only 2 delay settings for the surround speakers. One for the left and right surrounds and one for the surround back channel.

My L & R surround speakers are not symmetrical either so I've set the delay to a compromise between the two. It works fine for me.

To state the obvious...unless the distance is massive it's not going to make that much difference. If it was exact you'd have to measure the distance from all the speakers mark an X on your sofa and only one person can watch a film at a time

I have a 1080 and the only thing that hisses in my place is the misses    Especially when I tell her I want to upgrade part of my system.

Seriously no probs from my 1080.
