What is the deal where Sony and SanDisk Memory Sticks are concerned?

Are SanDisk officially licenced out to produce Memory Sticks by Sony, or did this company co-create Memory Stick technology alongside Sony? Or... Are SanDisk simple a subsidary company to Sony?

I ask,as my mate recently bought a W800 mobile phone, and with it came a SanDisk Memory Stick and not a Sony one (Which you would expect)

Also, why are Sony Memory Sticks so expensive, yet SanDisk ones are three times cheaper? If you compare the prices of a 1GB SanDisk Memory Stick with a Sony one... Well, it's clearly obvious that someone is being ripped off along teh line...

Sandisk make all kinds of flash memory, and yes like Mad Katz, sony has licensed the magigate technolgy to them allowing them to produce there own Memory Sticks.., difference between Sandisk and a lot of other brands is that sandisk offer high speed verions of flash memmory like it's Ultra 2 range...
I'd go for the SanDisk High Speed Version of flash memory if you do not want to spend ages waiting to copy your 500MB movie, and at the end of the day it's Sony, your paying more because of the name...

Call me fickle, but I have always gone with official Sony products. Hell, I even go as far as using Sony branded Alkaline batteries in various everyday things such as remote controls Etc...

So I guess that by using a SanDisk Memory Stick, it doesn't invalidate any Sony warranty or anything like that?

What I can't understand is why they would choose to include a SanDisk Memory Stick in with their product, instead of an official Sony one... Are they just trying to cut corners again, or is this maybe a practice of the mobile phone chain who sold the product? What Memory Stick did everyone else with a W800 get with it?

I guess with the PSP coming to these shores any day now, the price of Memory Sticks will drasticly drop. Saying that, PS2 Memory Cards seem to have held their price over the years...

well I'm using 2 sandisk 1GB Memory Stick Duos in my PSP and Sony Ericsson K750i. No problems at all.

I'd imagine that whoever you bought your phone from chose to buy sandisk for cost reasons. Sony Ericsson is a joint venture so it may not be mandated to buy only Sony, and it may have found Sandisk better.

Personally though I just wish Sony would give up on memory stick and choose one of the other formats. I only took the plunge for the above items because it could now be bought for a reasonable price from Sandisk.

There is really no advantage to "Sony" in the flash memory game and because they are not a primary producer there prices are not so good. Most of the cost in larger cards is the flash memory, and I don't know if Sony even produces any. As only Sony use it there is much less economy of scale.

I think you'll find Memory Sticks with less premium now Sandisk is in the market. I think Sony will as usual still be pricey and slower with larger sizes. Still 1GB is good enough to fit a whole DVD for a PSP, and its twice the size of current Shuffles.

    Cheers

SanDisk are a company that specialise in producing memory solutions, and are the worlds biggest flash memory manufacturer. I'd rather go for SanDisk than Sony.

You may prefer Sony's products but that doesn't mean you should assume another companies are inferior just because you haven't heard of the brand.

I thought in Japan Sony was considered to be just a box shifter anyway?
