As stated on another thread I went to the Heathrow HI-FI show last sunday. Finally got chance to see the new Sony S master amps in the flesh. Not overkeen on the big ugly ES range, but love the DB 2000. The salesman tried to wow me with the wonders of the new digital amps by showing me a 150 watt amp the size of a pack of cards. Very impressive, but why if these new digital amps can be so small and powerful do the new receivers have to be so huge?
Still I look forward to hearing these in the near future.

    pcookie - I'm not an S Master Digital fan I'm afraid :(

It's basically technology Sony have borrowed from their HCIAB DAVS Systems and put into receivers, the very premise of which is offputting.

This showed in the sound to my ears too, which was (on the DB790/2000) a little weedy and dry.

It'd be more impressive if (as you say) the amps weren't so bloody big, but that's just Sony's way of doing things I guess.

To be fair as long as there is a difference between a DAV system chip "S-MASTER" amp and the new S-MASTER amps in these (hideous) new AV amps, it could be worth it. Digital amps are something I don't even pretend to understand but I do know that the Digital amp demonstrator that Karl Heinz Fink had at the Frankfurt hi end show in May was among the finest audio I have ever heard. I'll wait to hear one (preferably with it in a cupboard).

    Dimmy,
I take it you've heard these new amps. Interesting that you had the same feelings about the 790 and the 2000 as one is analogue and the other digital.
Was there no difference in the sound?

    Wyerd,
Fraid not, but I wouldn't buy one until I've read a few reviews and had an audition. I do get the feeling that they should be out soon as the 790 is already in the shops.

Thanks for the update - I've been waiting since May for the DB2000. I last heard it's due in September!

nb Sony rate the db790 as 100WPC DIN, which only equates to around 65W rms, so that db2000 at 150WPC DIN would only equate to 110ish RMS. you're better off with a Yammy AX640 imo
