Possibly a stupid question, but can the freeview receiver i have receive freesat if connected to a dish.Sony RDR-HXD970

Yes, the right forum, and a very simple answer - no.
Freeview comes from a transmitter maybe 200 feet up a mast a few miles away from you, Freesat from satellites more than 20000 miles above the equator.
