no, because the Sky HD service is "closed loop", meaning you can't output to a different device in HD.

and even if you could get HD out of the Sky HD box, the Sony 970 isn't a HD recorder anyway (you can't get HD recorders yet, apart from as drives for your computer).

if you record from Sky HD, it will be down-coded to SD.

As MuksC says , you will not get HD out of it, but it is quite likely that the results will still be reasonably good as the original acquisition was of elevated quality....even though you would be recording on a SD device.

Front end quality is extremely significant in the perception of final viewing quality almost irrespective of the viewing and degraded quality route.

It also needs mentioning that the HD standards permit downgraded material from closed system HD devices to be at a higher resolution than SD material ... which I think will be a deliberate strategy to encourage the drive to HD.

[ 940 is the upper resolution figure IIRC]

Also, if you're going to keep the recording on the hard drive, you could use HQ+ mode, which is better than DVD quality.

OK but what's the ideal way to connect Sky HD to the Sony HXD970 to achieve the best picture and sound quality?

For the best picture quality , I was thinking of connecting a decent SCART RGB cable from TV SCART on the Sky HD box to LINE 1 SCART on the HXD970, a decent SCART RGB cable being something like http://www.audiovisualonline.co.uk/...75m-rgb-scart-cable-interconnect/display.html.

This won't give me any sound though from the Sky HD box through to the HXD970 so how do I achieve that?

BTW - the HXD970 will be connected to directly to a Philips 47PFL9632 LCD via HDMI and to an Onkyo-705 AV amp via Digital Coaxial Audio cable for surround sound.

A fully wired SCART from the 'TV out' of the Sky box to the L1 input of the 970 will pass RGB and audio just fine. Set the L1 input to RGB (Page 137 of the manual), and you will get a very good (if not HD) picture, when you record.

    Nice one JH4.

Any recommendations for a decent, value for money fully wired SCART lead?
