Sony RDR-HXD970 ghosting problems

I recently bought a Sony RDR-HXD970 and have a very strange fault. When using the Sony freeview tuner, playing back HDD recorded programmes AND when watching pre-recorded DVDs I get a wierd and very subtle ghosting travelling across the screen, as if it is playing/picking up a channel and trying to display it at the same time as whatever i am actuially trying to watch.

Has anyone else had this problem or got any ideas as to the cause?

The Recorder is connected to a Panasonic 28" CRT via a single scart, and the aerial connection goes from the wall into the Sony "digital aerial in" and then from the "digital aerial out" into the TV. There is no ghosting when using the digital tuner in the Panasonic TV.

have you used a fully wired scart lead ?

have you tried a different scart lead ?

are you using line 3 output on the sony to connect the scart to the tv ?

have you tried any other scart sockets on the panasonic tv ?

have you set the recorder output to rgb ?

have you tried it on a different tv ?

have you disconnected the coaxial aerial in the back of the tv whilst trying it ?

This is caused by the TV sending it's own tuner output on pin 19 of the incoming scart. The signal then cross-talks with the incoming signal - usually within the scart lead itself.

It is usually possible to prove this is the cause by first tuning the TV to a 'non station' so there is no synced TV signal present... [ or remove the aerial connection from the back of the TV as ramjet suggests]...and then playing the DVDR.
The interference should disappear under these circumstances.

The solution is either to retract pin 19 of the scart lead going into the TV, or get a better quality scart with independently screened signal cores.

Brilliant :)
Ramjets - the recorder output wasn't set to RGB - this has improved things a LOT, but still very slight ghosting.
Gavtech - I will upgrade the SCART asap - it was a cheap one and is over 10 years old so .
Thanks for the help, it's really appreciated...

glad to be of help , although the cheap unshielded scart is favourite for the ghosting as mentioned earlier

so I would now go with gavrech`s suggestion and get a fully shielded good quality fully wired scart cable to stop the interference , or to disconnect pin 19

How could this be possible ?
I guess that watching the RDR DVD on the TV set, the TV is switched on AV#n, and hope when so configured that no TV tuner signal is present on SCART pin#19 (Video out -but DVD signal instead if not copy protected) ...
Where am I wrong ?

I don't know if you are wrong.
It depends on the sophistication of the TV's switching.
Bear in mind this is a relatively old technology set.

this happened on my brothers old philips crt tv when he was watching something , and he was using an old scart lead too

the scart lead was changed for a fully wired screened cable and the problem went away , and we had diagnosed it was interference from the set too

and in any case , its not a case of the theoretical dos and donts

the thread author has a problem and this may well solve it and so that old scart lead of his needs to be replaced , and if the fault clears then it was worthwhile

if it doesnt clear then he will no doubt want further help which we can try to afford him

debating semantics doesnt necessarily help the person asking for help , so its a process of elimination and hopefully gavtech hit the nail on the head

Just want to say thanks to all the contributors on this subject. This is the first time i have used a forum for technical help, and the assistance from everyone has been invaluable.

The RGB setting was the major difference (thanks Ramjet), and the new scart I bought today has sorted the remaining ghosting, (thanks Gavtech):smashin:

Brilliant forum and one which i am sure i'll be using more often, especially when I finally get my new 50" plasma. :D
